Programme description

This programme starts by constructing a solid foundation of language proficiency and understanding upon which to build progressively more demanding studies of different aspects of the English language. The aim of the programme is to develop in all students an in-depth knowledge and understanding of the language. Through their studies in the programme, students will gain communicative skills for work and study; a good understanding of the structure and use of the language; a critical ability to analyse language and literature in context; understanding of language and society and the place of English in the world and a commitment to personal development through lifelong learning. The programme provides a recognised qualification which is highly valued by employers in areas where language proficiency and the ability to analyse language are important. It will open up career pathways in general administrative and executive work, for example, in the civil service, in non-government organizations as well as in commerce and the business sector. The programme also provides an excellent preparation for language teaching and is listed by the Education Bureau as a Recognised Language Major Degree. Graduates of this programme will partial exemption from the Language Proficiency Requirement for English teachers.


Programme requirements

There are three pathways for students pursuing this programme. Pathway 1 and 2 are specifically designed for holders of an Associate Degree or equivalent qualification.

Full programme (BLSENG)

Students admitted to the full programme are required to successfully complete at least 90 credit-units as follows:

(a) 24 credit-units of core courses from Table F-1;
(b) 30 credit-units of concentration courses from Table F-2;
(c) 15 credit-units of elective courses from Table F-3;
(d) 9 credit-units of elective courses from Table F-4;
(e) 3 credit-units of Free Choice course; and
(f) 9 credit-units of University Core courses.

Pathway 1 (BLSENG1)

Students applying for BLSENG1 should have obtained a recognized Associate Degree, Higher Diploma, or equivalent, in an area related to English studies.

Students admitted to the programme through Pathway 1 are required to successfully complete at least 36 credit-units as follows:

(a) 3 credit-units of core course from Table 1-1;
(b) 6 credit-units of concentration course from Table 1-2;
(c) 12 credit-units of elective courses from Table 1-3;
(d) 3 credit-units of elective course from Table 1-4;
(e) 3 credit-units of elective course from Table 1-5; and
(f) 9 credit-units of University Core courses.

Recognized language major degree programmes

The BLSENG programme is included in the Education Bureau’s list of ‘Recognized Language Major Degree Programmes’. In combination with a relevant teacher qualification, graduates are eligible for exemption from the Language Proficiency Requirement for English Language Teachers.


Choosing the first courses to get started

The programme includes courses in language proficiency, language studies and in the use of information technology for learning. Students who are new to university study should start their studies with 1000-level courses in English language and information technology for learning, as well as taking the 2000-level language studies course, ENGL 2202AED and ENGL 2203AED.

Once students have developed their language and learning foundation, they can move on to 2000-level language proficiency as well as tackling the 3000-level language studies courses.
