Programme description

This programme provides students with a solid foundation in English language proficiency with a focus on communicative effectiveness for the workplace and/or for further study. Through their studies towards the Certificate, they will develop the ability to read with understanding and to write clear, accurate and effective English. Students will learn how to focus their listening skills and to speak English convincingly and persuasively. They will also have the opportunity to acquire an internationally recognised qualification in English for study purposes – the IELTS test.

Students pursuing this programme must successfully complete 30 credits as follows:
(a) 5 credits from courses:

ENGL E210 English for Effective Communication II: Listening and Speaking 5 Middle
Credits gained from pre-foundation courses (i.e. ENGL A090 and ENGL E070) cannot be counted towards degree or honours degree programmes.

Choosing the first courses to get started

Students should start with one of the pre-foundation level ( ENGL A090 English Speaking and Listening Skills, or ENGL E070 English for Post Secondary Study) or foundation level courses ( BUS B103 English and Communications for Business I, ENGL E110 English for Effective Communication I: Listening and Speaking and ENGL E120 English for Effective Communication I: Reading and Writing) before moving on to the middle level courses such as ENGL E200, ENGL E210 and ENGL E205. However, students should note that the credits they gain from studying pre-foundation courses ( ENGL A090 and ENGL E070 ) cannot be counted towards degree programmes.
