Programme description

This programme is specially designed for teachers who would like to specialize in English studies and English language teaching. It is particularly useful for English teachers whose degree is not a major in English. It is also relevant to educators and trainers who have interest in developing in-depth understanding of English language education.

The Master of Education in English Language Education are included in the Education Bureau’s list of ‘Recognized Language Major Degree Programmes’. This qualification, together with a relevant teacher’s qualification, is recognized for exemption from the Language Proficiency Requirement for English Language Teaches.

Programme requirements

There are two pathways for students pursuing this programme. This programme provides academic and professionally-related study of education for teachers, educational administrators and adult trainers.

MEDELE1 — Pathway 1

Programme-specific entry requirements:

(a) a recognized degree (or its equivalent); and

(b) normally, a recognized teacher’s qualification and at least two years’ teaching or training experience (but applicants who do not have this qualification/experience may be admitted where the School of Education and Languages considers their background to be suitable for Master’s level study in Education).

Number of credits: 60

Students MUST take the ENGL E810F course in the 2022 Autumn Term if they have not taken it before and if they intend to complete the course to fulfil the graduation requirement. The ENGL E810F course will be restructured after its last presentation in the 2022 Autumn Term and students will NOT be able to fulfil the graduation requirement of the Master of Education in English Language Education (MEDELE) if they take the restructured ENGL E810F course.

Advanced standing/Credit exemption

Students with recognized relevant postgraduate qualifications may apply for advanced standing/credit exemption. A maximum of 30 credits may be granted.

MEDELE2 — Pathway 2

Programme-specific entry requirements:

(a) a recognized degree (or its equivalent); and

(b) normally, a recognized teacher’s qualification and at least two years’ teaching or training experience (applicants who do not have this qualification/experience may be admitted where the School of Education and Languages considers their background to be suitable for Master’s level study in Education); and

(c) have completed a Postgraduate Programme in Subject Knowledge (PGSK) for English/Chinese Language Teachers approved by the EDB.

Recognized language major degree programmes:

  • The Master of Education in English Language Education and the Master of Education in Chinese Language Education are included in the Education Bureau’s list of ‘Recognized Language Major Degree Programmes’. Teachers can apply to the Professional Development Incentive Grant Scheme for Language Teachers.
  • The Master of Education in English Language Education, together with a relevant teacher’s qualification, is recognized for exemption from the Language Proficiency Requirement for English Language Teachers.
