Aims 課程宗旨

 
The Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Language Studies and Translation (Full-time) degree programme aims to enable students to learn a range of linguistic and translation skills, including how to deal with the cultural dimension of translation, account for the differences between the English and Chinese languages and handle translated texts in specialized areas (e.g. law, business, public administration and/or media).
語言研究與翻譯榮譽文學士〈全日制課程〉旨在提供語言與翻譯方面的訓練,課題包括從文化角度探討翻譯,分析中英文的異同,以及培養學員在法律、商業、公共行政及╱或傳播媒介等專門領域中的翻譯能力。

Objectives 課程目標

 
The overall objective is to bring students to a level of practical proficiency that will enable them to be linguistically and analytically equipped to complete extended language and translation assignments and deal with linguistically and culturally-related problems in language studies and translation, thus increasing their confidence as practising language professionals.
課程主要提升學員兩文三語的能力和分析的技巧,讓學員掌握翻譯長篇文稿和研究語言的竅門。此外,課程亦從語言及文化角度探討翻譯,從而增強學員從事語文工作及專業翻譯工作的信心。

Programme Structure 課程結構

Year-1 entry:
Students admitted to the programme through Year-1 Entry are required to successfully complete at least 120 credit-units, according to the following guidelines:

  • 60 credit-units of Core courses;
  • 18 credit-units of Core Elective courses;
  • 21 credit-units of Elective courses;
  • 6 credit-units of General Education courses;
  • 6 credit-units of English Language courses; and
  • 9 credit-units of University Core courses.

Year-2 entry: (2024/2025 onwards)
Students admitted to the programme through Year-2 Entry are required to successfully complete at least 93 credit-units, according to the following guidelines:

  • 54 credit-units of Core courses (including TRAN 1261ACF, TRAN 1271ACF, and all Middle, Higher and Senior level Core courses);
  • 18 credit-units of Core Elective courses;
  • 12 credit-units of Elective courses or English Language courses (ENGL 1101AEF is recommended to satisfy specific Core course prerequisite), or to include a maximum of 3 credit-units of General Education courses; and
  • 9 credit-units of University Core courses.

Year-3 entry: (2024/2025 onwards)
Students admitted to the programme through Year-3 Entry are required to successfully complete at least 66 credit-units, according to the following guidelines:

  • a. 36 credit-units of Core courses (including all Higher and Senior level Core courses);
  • 18 credit-units of Core Elective courses;
  • 3 credit-units of Elective courses or English Language courses (ENGL 1101 AEF is recommended to satisfy specific Core course prerequisite), or General Education courses; and
  • 9 credit-units of University Core courses.

  4. Prerequisite for TRAN 4269ABF: ENGL 1101AEF or a similar university level writing course from other higher education institutions, subject to approval by the Course Coordinator of TRAN 4269ABF and BAHLTJ Programme Leader.
  5. Prerequisite for LANG 4501AEF: LANG 3501 AEF.

  • Programme Structure

Students must complete 160 credits.

(i) 60 credits of compulsory courses from Table 1 (each course carries 5 credits);
(ii) 60 credits of elective courses from Table 2 (each course carries 5 credits);
(iii) 20 credits of outside discipline courses (each course carries 5 credits); and
(iv) 20 credits of purpose-designed General Education (GE) courses.
