Prof. Roy Vellaisamy, newly appointed Chair Professor of Intelligent Systems at Hong Kong Metropolitan University's (HKMU) School of Science and Technology (S&T), has pioneered an enhanced design for thermoelectric generators (TEGs), which can durably and efficiently convert industrial waste heat into usable electricity. The enhanced design may directly increase the efficiency of heat-to-electricity conversion, providing a good demonstration of the application of research to resolve real-world problems.

Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) has a long and excellent track record in environmental science research, especially on harmful algal blooms (HABs) and beneficial applications of microalgae. To further microalgae research in the Greater Bay Area (GBA) and Southeast Asia, in 2022, the School of Science and Technology (S&T) of HKMU established the first open-access microalgae collection and research centre in Hong Kong: the Metropolitan Algal Repository and Supply (MARS).

Simultaneous interpretation and public speaking both emphasise on-the-spot reaction. However, it's not an easy task to provide students with real-life interpreting and speaking scenarios for practice. Therefore, Dr Venus Chan, Assistant Professor in the School of Arts and Social Sciences of Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU), led a team to develop the “XR MALL” interactive mobile app, which combines Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technologies to offer immersive simultaneous interpretation, consecutive interpretation and public-speaking scenarios on a smartphone. It enables students, as well as the general public, to overcome the constraints of time, space and resources to practise interpretation and public speaking anytime, anywhere, providing a flexible, student-centred learning model.

Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) is actively promoting the teaching and development of healthcare through innovation and technology. In collaboration with Caritas Institute of Higher Education (CIHE) and Tung Wah College (TWC), HKMU will develop a cross-institutional Virtual Reality (VR) simulation teaching game.

In the latest round of the Competitive Research Funding Schemes for the Local Self-financing Degree Sector of the Research Grants Council (RGC), Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) secured a total of HK$29.1 million for 27 projects, accounting for over 35% of the total RGC allocation, making it the largest player among all local self-financing institutions.

Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) collaborated with Hong Kong Lutheran Social Service, LC-HKS (HKLSS) to conduct research titled “Dementia risks among Hongkongese aged 55 or above”. The study collected data from more than 1,000 participants aged 55 or above to assess their risk of dementia, analyse related factors, and gain insights into their awareness of dementia.

Environmental science is one of the strategic research areas of Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU). Dr Juan Carlos Astudillo Placencia, Assistant Professor in the School of Science and Technology, will start to work on a research project which involves exploring eco-engineering works at the rip rap seawall in south Hong Kong through the use of innovative eco-concrete features to augment habitat complexity. Through this project and his other innovative research, he hopes to demonstrate the benefits of eco-engineering of seawalls to the general public.

The Public and Social Policy Research Centre, under the School of Arts and Social Sciences of Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU), is commissioned by the Hong Kong Network for the Promotion of Inclusive Society (HKNPIS) to evaluate the effectiveness of its Jockey Club Support Service for the Children of Disabled Parents 2.0 scheme. The support scheme is targeted at parents who have difficulty performing their parenting role due to physical or mental disabilities. By matching them with young volunteers, who provide academic and personal guidance for their able-bodied children, as well as offering a series of parental training and counselling services, the scheme aims to enhance the communication between disabled parents and their children and reduce the risk of intergenerational poverty for these families.

At the opening reception of the Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Troupe (HKCOT) on 31 May, its founder, Dr Ina Ho Chan Un-chan, announced a donation to HKMU for the establishment of the Ina Ho Cantonese Opera Research Centre, which aims to promote education and appreciation of Cantonese opera, as well as enhance local young people and the overseas community's knowledge and appreciation of Cantonese opera through Cantonese opera libretti translation, exchange activities and academic research.
