To fulfil her goal of becoming a professional in occupational
safety and health, SHUM Tsz-kiu (Debby) decided to enrol in the
Bachelor of Science with Honours in Occupational Safety and
Health Management programme jointly organised by LiPACE and
Middlesex University. This programme is accredited by the
British Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH). Few
institutions in Hong Kong offer professional programmes in
occupational safety and this one appeals in particular to OSH
practitioners. The degree programme emphasises practical skills,
including safety regulations, so that students can learn further
about the industry in which they will be working in, she says.
At the height of COVID, LiPACE allowed in-service students to
freely choose whether to engage in online classes or attend
physical classes. The flexible hybrid teaching model had helped
students to cope with their studies during the difficult period
of the pandemic.
“The instructors have extensive industry knowledge and teaching
experience. They not only teach us professional know-how, but
are also happy to share their valuable experiences and industry
insights to help us understand the latest trends in the field of
OSH,” she says. Debby recalls that she had to design a
questionnaire for her final year project and that her supervisor
taught her patiently how to gather and organise data, and use
graphs and charts to present the findings. With the dedicated
guidance of her supervisor, she completed the graduation
requirement on time. “LiPACE 's education is top-notch. The
degree programme has helped me to learn a lot about occupational
safety and health as an area of practice and study. After two
years of study, I can put this knowledge into practice in my
current role.” Working as ESG Programme Coordinator in the UK
branch of an open-source software company, Debby remembers the
School fondly and wishes LiPACE a bright future in attracting
and serving more students like her.
