HKMU LiPACE strives to provide students with quality Total Learning Experience. On Mar 22 (Tue) 2022, the LiPACE's 3i Initiatives hosted an amazing ZOOM experience of Guangcai Porcelain at Yuet Tung China Works with the amazing expert guest speaker Mr. Joseph Tso (The Manager & A third-generation member of the founder of hand-painted porcelain factory Yuet Tung China Works). Guangcai Making Technique is included in the List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Hong Kong and considered one of the treasures of the local history and culture. During the event, guest speaker Mr. Joseph Tso introduced the history of this fantastic art form, including history and characteristics of Guangcai, origin of the Guangcai style, the meaning of “Ci” (Porcelain). Guangcai, originated in Qing Dynasty, was the product of Chinese and Western exchanges. To this day, Guangcai porcelains are displayed in museums both home and abroad. Joseph also elaborated on Guangcai in Hong Kong context, bringing out the development of Hong Kong porcelain, on-glaze painting process, paint, design, decal, and porcelain decorated with Chinese painting. The Guangcai story in Hong Kong is equally worth exploring - when presented with the catalogues dated 1936 and the porcelains from the 1960s, we seemed to have travelled back in time when advertisement was still black and white, when bowls and plates were hand-painted with brush, when life was slower and simpler. What a surreal experience we virtually went through together!
The workshop ended with Joseph’s valuable note on Pursuit of Excellence in Workmanship - the spirit that guided generations of craftsmen in Guangcai. This spirit is also applicable to all professions. Let’s all pocket this and strive for excellence and quality! Thank you to all the participants for joining. Our gratitude goes again to Mr. Joseph Tso and Yuet Tung China Works for the wonderful sharing! We wish to see you soon in future events!

In addition to Shadow Puppet, a short performance of String Puppet was also included. When the Puppet Master Mr. CHEUNG flexibly operated the 40 strings in his hands, the string puppet danced intricately (just like a professional human dancer!) and turned from an old lady to a young girl and then to a flying goddess! Seeing the transformations in front of their very eyes, the audience wowed and cheered. The workshop ended with an engaging Q&A session and we look forward to future events!
