The project leader, Prof. Fred Lee, is the expert in the study of microalgae. He is a well-trained marine scientist and published widely in the field of harmful algae, proteomics and water quality. He has more than 20 years of experiences in handling the algal cultures, including isolation, identification, cultivation and maintenance of the algal cells.
Dr. Steven Xu is the Associate Director of the MARS and assist the Director for the management of the project who is an expert in the field of phytoplankton, toxic microalgae and water science. He has plenty of experiences in the study on the toxicology of ichthyotoxic algal species, particularly Chattonella marina. He will also be responsible for identifying suitable collaboration opportunities in the field of algal culturing with potential stakeholders in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area (GBA) and inviting overseas expert scientists to come over to HKMU for visits and knowledge exchange.
Dr. Sidney Chan is an experienced chemist and expert in the study on bioremediation of persistent organic pollutants using microalgae and method development for analyzing organic pollutants. He will serve as the Curator of MARS. He will be responsible to implementation of the project and oversee the daily operation of MARS.
