Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) held the naming ceremony of Fong Connie Nursing Skills Education Unit today (17 November) in recognition of the generous donation of HK$8 million from alumna-cum-Honorary University Fellow Miss Connie Fong Yin-king and her family to support the development of the new Jockey Club Institute of Healthcare and four research projects related to healthcare.

The ceremony was officiated by Miss Connie Fong Yin-king, HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Provost Prof. Reggie Kwan Ching-ping, Vice President (Resources and Development) Prof. Lui Yu-hon, and Vice President (Students and Support) Prof. Ricky Kwok Yu-kwong. During the ceremony, Prof. Lam expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Miss Fong for being a staunch supporter to the University. “Miss Fong’s selfless dedication and strong sense of belonging to her alma mater, as well as her spirit of continuous learning and advancement, have made her a role model for our students and should be commended. With the staunch support from our alumni like Miss Fong and many others in the community, the University was able to build this new campus and provide high quality education for our students,” he said.

Speaking at the ceremony, Miss Fong recognized the University’s contribution to lifelong learning, and wished the University to continue to provide top-quality education for aspiring learners. She also encouraged HKMU students to work hard and work smart, and give back to society after graduation.

Miss Connie Fong Yin-king and her family have contributed over HK$18 million in total to the University since 2007, supporting various projects including campus development, scholarships and the Research Matching Grant Scheme. Miss Fong finished the Bachelor of Arts in Language and Translation and the Master of Arts in Applied Translation programmes at the University in earlier years, and has just completed the Master of Science in Global Environmental Management for Sustainable Development. She was presented Honorary University Fellowship by the University in 2009.

In light of the growing demand for healthcare services, HKMU embarked on a campus development project to build the Jockey Club Institute of Healthcare years ago. The new campus was officially opened in January this year, providing professional laboratories, modern teaching and learning facilities as well as spacious amenities to enrich students’ learning experience. The Nursing Skills Education Unit named is located on the eighth floor of the building. The 140-square-metre Fong Connie Nursing Skills Education Unit is equipped with facilities such as a real ward setting, which provides students an ideal environment to learn fundamental nursing skills.
