The four-year Bachelor of Science with Honours in Physiotherapy programme aims to equip students with the necessary theoretical and practical skill, competence and confidence to qualify as professional Physiotherapists.

Why choose a physiotherapy degree?

Physiotherapy is an integral part of the rehabilitation process. The field is aimed squarely at developing, maintaining, and restoring maximum movement and functional ability for the patient. The physiotherapy degree taught at HKMU incorporates the concept of International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) promulgated by the World Health Organisation (WHO).HKMU's four-year physiotherapy degree is tailored for students to develop the necessary theoretical and practical skills needed to become qualified physiotherapists.With a physiotherapy degree from HKMU and after a period practising physiotherapy, you may also be able to apply to the State Registered Physiotherapist with the Health and Care Professions Council of the UK, or sit for the licensure examinations in the USA, Canada, and Australia.

Entry Qualifications

To be eligible for admission into the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Physiotherapy programme, applicants should satisfy the following academic requirements:

JUPAS:

Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE) qualifications at:

Level 3 or above in Chinese Language and English Language; and
Level 2 or above in Mathematics; and 
Attained Citizenship and Social Development
Level 2 or above in two elective subjects
(preferably Biology or Physics; or Combined Science with a Biology or Physics component).

Non-JUPAS:

Programme Details

The curriculum of the physiotherapy degree programme offered by the Hong Kong Metropolitan University has a strong focus on professional and lifelong learning skills. It adopts multiple learning and teaching strategies to facilitate student's learning. These strategies include early exposures, lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical sessions, self-guided practise, field visits, community services, online learning environment, capstone project and clinical practicum. The university also strives to incorporate innovative ways of teaching into the curriculum.

  • The curriculum is developed in compliance with international standards and the Physiotherapists Board's requirements for programme accreditation.
  • Professional courses are delivered in small classes/groups.
  • Ample early clinical exposure and community service opportunities allow students to experience the physiotherapy profession early on in the curriculum.
  • In addition to state-of-the-art equipment in specially designed laboratories, advanced technology such as web-based resource hub, simulation experience and digital dissection pedagogy are used to facilitate teaching and learning.
  • Clinical placements of over 1000 hours are arranged in hospitals, clinics, NGOs, and community-based settings.

Professional Recognition

The Programme has been accredited by the Supplementary Medical Professions Council in June 2024, graduates are eligible for registration to practise as physiotherapists in Hong Kong . They may apply for full membership of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association, which is a member of the World Physiotherapy (Formerly known as World Confederation for Physical Therapy).

Career Prospects

With Hong Kong facing a shortage of practising physiotherapists, those who choose a physiotherapy degree have prospects of working in hospitals, rehabilitation centres, public and private health organisations, private clinics, sports and fitness institutions, elderly homes, community centres, and special schools across Hong Kong.

Further Studies

There are ample opportunities for those graduates who choose to continue developing themselves with further studies. They may take up taught postgraduate programmes or research studentships (MPhil or PhD) at local or overseas universities.
