Department

The HKMU Physiotherapy Department engages in applied research that is envisioned to inform teaching, clinical practice, and community health promotion. Alongside staff-led research, we also equip students with research skills, a critical thinking mindset and the most up-to-date knowledge.

Our research areas are consistent with the strategic research areas set by the School of Nursing and Health Science that include gerontechnology, personalised care, and technology-based education.

Research Areas

Our research team comprises experts in biomechanics, orthopedics, and sports physiotherapy, dedicated to exploring the complexities of musculoskeletal health. By integrating clinical expertise with the latest scientific advancements, we strive to translate our findings into practical applications that benefit individuals of all activity levels, athletes, and participants in disabled sports.

Our research not only contributes to the academic community but also informs our educational programs, ensuring that our students and practitioners are equipped with the most current knowledge and skills. Through our work, we are shaping the future of patient care, athletic performance, and inclusive sports participation.

Our team is interested in investigating the utilization of physiotherapy service in the community with regards to patients with long COVID syndrome while capturing their reported symptoms, their perception on the benefits of the services available or referred, their consideration and decision whether they choose physiotherapy services. We would like to explore the improvement plan to promote physiotherapy and enhance public awareness on health or specific conditions.

Our research team is investigating complex challenges encountered by older adults at risk of falls, with a particular focus on those with cognitive impairment. We are developing comprehensive physiotherapy rehabilitation strategies, like gerontechnology and AI that integrate multiple domains beyond physical function, including cognitive, perceptual, and psychosocial aspects. By addressing the interplay between cognitive decline, fear of falling, and physical limitations, we aim to break the cycle of reduced activity and confidence loss. Ultimately, our goal is to create a positive impact on both healthcare delivery and community support systems for our aging population.

Our paediatrics research team is studying potential challenges faced by children having neurodevelopmental problems and work on physiotherapy rehabilitation incorporating various aspects which should not be limited to motor functions. Ultimately, we aim at providing a positive impact on both healthcare and education systems.

Our research in motor learning and neurorehabilitation focuses on generating evidence to support independent function of individuals with neurological and developmental conditions. Current projects explore motor learning strategies such as dual-task and errorless motor learning. We are also looking at changes in brain activation using functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) following movement and exercise.

Learning and teaching research focuses on exploring various areas in education that improve students' learning experiences and outcomes. It also delves into teachers' experiences. Our team is particularly interested in examining the impacts of curriculum initiatives that enhance student engagement and the overall quality of our physiotherapy education. These initiatives include, but are not limited to, authentic assessment designs and strategies, genuine community and clinical engagement, and innovative pedagogies incorporating technologies.
