1. What is Special Educational Needs (SENs)?

According to Education Bureau (2024), the major types of Special Educational Needs (SENs) include
  • Intellectual Disability
  • Autism Spectrum Disorder
  • Attention Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Mental Illness
  • Specific Learning Difficulties
  • Physical Disability
  • Visual Impairment
  • Hearing Impairment
  • Speech and Language Impairment
The University is dedicated to fostering an inclusive environment that promotes equal opportunities for all members of our community, regardless of gender, marital status, disability, race and family status. Hence, Chronic Illness / Visceral Disability will be also included in our services.


2. The Role of SAO

  • To coordinate with relevant academic and administrative offices to provide appropriate support and services to accommodate students with SEN.
  • To discuss with student for his/her Educational Plan after submission of SEN application. It is a process to understand how HKMU can accommodate SEN student's learning needs and situation
  • Referrals to relevant units for supporting students' adjustment needs such as financial and psychosocial. Confidentiality is guaranteed.
  • Students with SENs who have financial difficulties may also apply for the University bursaries or Student Financial Assistance Scheme.

  • Document with Learning / Examination Recommendations from relevant Professional
For continuing students who have submitted the application for SEN support services to SAO before, we would assume the support measures, such as examination arrangements, to be given to you would remain unchanged. But students concerned are required to contact relevant course coordinator(s) to discuss the needs during the course of the studies.
For your information that our New SEN System will be launched soon. All students with SEN status will be verified through simple processes. Our staffs of SEN Team will contact you for assessing and reviewing your condition yearly. Welcome to contact us if you have any concerns for our system updated.
