The HKMU Student Loan Scheme, which is interest-free, is funded by the Government. Students have the option to repay the loan amount one year after the loan is issued or even after graduation.

Application Period for the 2025 Spring Term
First Round:  1 – 22 November 2024
Second Round: 23 November – 30 December 2024

  1. Applicants must intend to register for any part time (distance learning) credit-bearing course at HKMU.
  2. Applicants must have the right of abode in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region or have continuously resided or maintained their homes in Hong Kong for three complete years immediately prior to the commencement of the programme/course. This does not apply to students studying in Hong Kong on student visas.

Note(1) The 'year' is determined by the starting point of the first assistance accepted by individual students.

Note (2) The type of loan offered depends on the applicants' preferences and their loan limit.

Note (3) In the second round of application, only PAOY loan will be offered to successful applicants. 

Note (4) The total amount for POG Loan(s) a student is bearing (loans not yet fully repaid) should not exceed HK$100,000 at any time.

Note (5) For POG loans, repayment of the loan will be due in one of the following situations, whichever occurs first:

a. upon accepting an HKMU award, i.e. certificate, diploma, higher diploma, degree; or
b. upon achievement of 160 credits (for 5-credit programmes) / 120 credits (for 3-credit-unit programmes); or
c. 6 years after the first loan is issued; or
d. upon obtaining 3 'fails' (including absence) results or withdrawals from a total of 3 courses supported by bursary/loan; or
e. upon suspension of study for more than 2 consecutive terms after the bursary/loan is awarded.

Note (6) A non-refundable administrative fee of 0.5% of the loan amount should be paid when applicants confirm acceptance of the loans.

Assessment Criteria

  1. Loan applicants' monthly income should not exceed HK$60,000.
  2. Eligible applicants are not guaranteed to be offered loan.
  3. Loan applications from students who are currently in bankruptcy or under an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) will be rejected.
  4. The assessment results and proposed allocations will be reviewed by the HKMU Student Financial Awards Committee. The type of assistance offered to individual successful applicants and the number of successful applicants are determined by the applicants' financial circumstances, the criteria for making an award like academic performance, the funds available in any term, and other factors the Committee deems necessary.
  5. Submission of documentary evidence is required upon request (i.e. Latest income proof for at least three consecutive months).

Announcement of Result

  • The results of 1st round and 2nd round applications will be announced by late December 2024 and early January 2025 respectively.

  1. Applicants should read the "Guidance Notes for HKMU Student Financial Assistance Scheme" before completing the online application form.
  2. There are two different application forms: (a) New students should complete the full version of application form on this online platform (http://www.hkmu.edu.hk/mu-loans). (b) Continuing students should complete the simplified version of application form on the student portal “MyHKMU” (http://www.hkmu.edu.hk/myhkmu).
  3. Applicants should complete the course registration for the 2025 Spring Term before the closing of the loan application period (check the courses to be offered in this term). For enquiries about course registration, please contact the Admissions & Enrolment Team (Distance Learning) of the Registry.
  4. Course places are only reserved upon full settlement of tuition fees. Applicants may consider paying the tuition fees themselves during the course registration process if they wish to secure a place in the course(s). The Student Affairs Office will NOT reserve course places for any applicants. In case students decide not to pay the tuition fees during course registration, the course and class places are not guaranteed, however, they are still eligible to apply for the financial assistance.
  5. Applicants of the second round are required to pay the tuition fees first. If they are experiencing financial difficulties and are unable to pay the tuition fees, they may apply for a direct transfer of the loan amount to their tuition fees account, but the course place is not guarantee.
  6. If the loan application is ultimately unsuccessful, applicants who have successfully completed course registration cannot use this as a justification for course withdrawal, and the paid tuition fees will NOT be refunded or transferred to another term or for another use.
