HKMU introduces distance learning programmes to young inmates

A team of representatives from Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) visited Sha Tsui Correctional Institution on June 26, 2023, to share information on post-secondary education programmes with more than 100 young inmates. The team included Prof. KWOK Yu-kwong, Vice President of HKMU, Dr. LI Kam Cheong, Dean of School of Open Learning, HKMU, and Ms. LAW Yuen Kan, Manager of School of Open Learning of HKMU. They introduced the features and structure of HKMU's distance learning programmes and had group discussions with the inmates to offer them learning advice. The sharing session was also live-streamed to Pik Uk Correctional Institution for more inmates to join. According to a report, the Correctional Services Department (CSD) has signed Memorandums of Understanding with HKMU and eight UGC-funded universities to provide inmates with grants and credit transfer support to help them resume their studies after release. By participating in this activity, HKMU hopes to support inmates who wish to continue their studies and encourage them to pursue university courses.
