Programme Introduction

The Bachelor of Social Sciences with Honours in Ageing Society and Services Studies programme is the first 4-year full-time undergraduate programme offered by a local tertiary institution that provides training in the analysis of issues in an ageing society and in the study of ageing-related services. Graduates are expected to participate in positions in expanding industries that serve ageing populations.

This programme prepares students with the knowledge and transferable skills required for identifying, analysing and evaluating issues arising out of an ageing society and related services provision. Its multidisciplinary curriculum draws upon applied economics, applied social studies, politics and public administration as well as psychology. It looks into subject areas including, but not limited to the economics of healthcare and retirement, as well as related public policy and services development.

Upon graduation, graduates will be able to:

Identify major issues in an ageing society and corresponding services needs;
Be familiarised with knowledge and skills in services provision and management in clinical settings; and
Be familiarised with the operation of social services organisations and social enterprises.

Graduates will be ready to participate in positions in public and private sectors, including:

The fields of social welfare and community services, and assume administrative and managerial positions in long-term care facilities, elderly centres, government offices, voluntary and non-governmental organisations, etc.;
Social and business enterprises, and serve in professional positions in health and human services provision, health promotion and/or community development; and
Government agencies, non-governmental organisations and think-tanks, and assume professional positions in aged care policy development and related research.

Graduates can begin their career as project coordinators or officers, research analysts, etc. With working experience accumulated, graduates can advance to higher management levels.

Our programme also prepares graduates to further their studies in gerontology, social work, nursing, social policy as well as public policy studies.
