Programme Aims

This programme is designed to equip students with critical knowledge and understanding of both the theoretical and practical aspects of specialized disciplines, including advanced gem testing technologies, the history of world jewellery, jewellery appraisal methodologies, gems and precious metals, jewellery manufacturing and quality management. The programme will emphasize practical, experiential learning opportunities with jewellery enterprises and will place a substantial emphasis on trade/industry terminology and the cultivation of proficient communication skills.

Entry Requirements

The Bachelor of Applied Science in Gemmology and Jewellery Studies (BASCGEM2) programme is presented in distance learning (DL) mode. As an applied degree programme, this programme provides both the normal-route admissions based on academic results and the professional-route admissions based on the professional qualification.

Programme-specific entry requirement:

Applicants to the programme must satisfy the entry requirements of academic-route or professional-route:

Academic-route

  • Holders of a recognized Higher Diploma or Associate Degree in Gemmology, Jewellery Management, or a closely related discipline or equivalent from an institution recognized by the University for the purpose.

Professional route

  • Having obtained the Diploma's qualification of the Gemmological Association of Great Britain (Gem-A), including both Gem-A UK QF Level 5 Gem Diamond Diploma (DGA) and Gem-A UK QF Level 6 Diploma in Gemmology (FGA); or equivalent qualification recognised by the University; and
  • Preferably with at least one year relevant work experience in the jewellery industry.

For the top-up distance learning programme BASCGEM2, admitted students are required to complete at least 30 credit-units.
