Objectives

This project aims to enhance the cognition of Chinese orthography in daily life of junior education, which can finally improve the problem of using typos and raise their awareness of writing orthography.

A gamification of education in Android platform is designed to ease the problem found above. User needs to control a character to escape from the maze through studying different types of orthographies. As a result, their knowledge on orthography will be enhanced.

In achieving the aim, seven objectives are included as following.

Data Collection

Collect the common typos in daily life according to observation, academic paper and books.

Question Bank

Create a question bank with different types of questions which contains appropriate amounts of typos based on the result of data analysis from data collection.

Question Bank Storage

Save the question bank in the local database which applied in the game.

Story Line

Design a story line for the game to rise up the attractive of the whole game flow.

Maze Maps

Design five localized mazes and each represents different location in Hong Kong.

User-friendly Controller UI

Implement a joystick controller to allow user interacting in the maze smoothly.

Social Features

User can share their result to third-party social media to build up a social network with friends; hence they could compare their game results to increase their motivation on learning Chinese orthography.

Video Demonstration

Background and Methodology

An educational game will be developed based on the problems . This is a maze escaping game combined with quiz questions. Total of five mazes are provided with 10 questions per maze. Students need to answer all the questions correctly to escape each maze in order to complete the game. This project is an android-based mobile game, which needs to connect to the Internet while playing the game. Cloud technology (Firebase), database operation (SQLite) and 3D animation will be applied and integrated with Unity Engine.

Conclusion and Future Development

The project is developing an educational game on the Android platform. We have a main purpose of this project. The project aims to enhance the cognition of Chinese orthography in daily life of junior education, which can finally improve the problem of using typos and raise their awareness of writing orthography.

A good educational game should have two features. The first one is providing an interesting learning environment for user. The main difference between the traditional teaching and the educational game is the motivation. The educational game can enhance the motivation on learning some boring knowledge. That means user can learn and study in a more efficient way. To correct the typos, the percentage of success of educational game is higher than the traditional teaching, also the motivation of studying would not decrease or even increase. Therefore, we design a maze escaping game for the user which contains different level of typos question. We would like to attract the target user to finish the typos correction through the mission setting and story line in the game.

The second one is providing a game flow that user can study and learn step by step. In every learning process, people should learn the brief concept and theory first, and grasp the knowledge through the practice. This mode can enhance the understanding of the concept and steady the new knowledge. Therefore, we design multi-level question to teach the difference between orthography and typos. The low-level is multiple choice question, user do not need to know how to write the specific orthography in this level, but need to recognize the typos and orthography. The high-level question require user to fill in the blank with the orthography, user must recognize the orthography and how to write it.

Through the evaluation on aims, we know that our aim is achieved successfully. It means that user can enhance their awareness of writing orthography and correct their typos through the game.

The result shows that writing orthography is not a difficult thing to achieve, it depends on would you aim to do that. We believe that enhance the awareness of writing orthography is the most efficient way to improve the situation of writing typos rather than traditional teaching.
