Work: Brain Computer Interface Feedback System for Dementia Patients
With her invention “Brain Computer Interface Feedback System for Dementia Patients”, Electronic and Computer Engineering student Ramsha Minhaj was awarded the Third Prize in the 9th Hong Kong University Student Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition (Information Technology Category) organised by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association.

The use of therapeutic robots in Cognitive Stimulation Therapy can stimulate dementia patients' brain activities and enhance their cognitive abilities. The robots are however not widely used because they rely on expensive physical sensors and the way they collect feedback from the patients is unsatisfactory. To address these problems, Ramsha designed the Brain Computer Interface Feedback System which features lightweight, low-cost single-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) measuring device and Python-based software for real-time EEG processing and classification that will provide the robot with more accurate brain activity information and facilitate its interaction with the patients. Ramsha hopes that her invention can encourage the use of robot therapy by dementia patients.
