Brain Computer Interface Feedback System for Dementia Patients

Details:
Electronic and Computer Engineering student Ramsha Minhaj took her invention Brain Computer Interface Feedback System for Dementia Patients to Innovate for Future 2023, and it received a Certificate of Excellence under the Tertiary Stream. Organised by the Hong Kong Electronics & Technologies Association, Innovate for Future is an open competition of innovation and technology to inspire young people in Hong Kong to create innovative products or services for solving and improving our real-life challenges, from idea generation to prototype development.

The system designed by Ramsha aims to counter the challenges facing therapeutic robots in cognitive stimulation therapy, such as high costs and poor feedback mechanisms, thereby widening its application among dementia patients. Featuring a lightweight, low-cost single-channel electroencephalogram (EEG) measuring device and Python-based software for real-time EEG processing and classification, the system will provide the robot with more accurate brain activity information and facilitate its interaction with patients.

The project had previously been awarded a Third Prize in the 9th Hong Kong University Student Innovation & Entrepreneurship Competition (Information Technology Category) organised by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association.
