HKMU launches Hong Kong's first applied degree programme in gemmology and jewellery studies

HKMU recently held the “International Gemmological Conference 2024 cum Launch Ceremony of Applied Degree Programme in Gemmology and Jewellery Studies”. The conference marked the introduction of Hong Kong’s first applied degree programme in gemmology and jewellery studies, with the goal of nurturing more talent in testing, certification, research and industry development for the gemstone and jewellery industry of Hong Kong.

As a global jewellery trade centre, Hong Kong has experienced growing demand from emerging markets in recent years, presenting a revival opportunity for the jewellery industry. Supported by the AGIL and industry partners, HKMU has launched Hong Kong’s first applied degree programme in gemmology and jewellery studies, available in a distance-learning module, which aims to equip students with both theoretical and practical knowledge in the gemstone and jewellery industry, to meet the demand for nurturing talent for the gemmology industry.

Ir Dr Tony Lee Chi-chung, Head of Construction and Quality Management, School of Science and Technology, HKMU,  expressed his gratitude to the professional teams and industry elite of the AGIL, and the external programme evaluators for their full support and invaluable advice on curriculum design and teaching methodologies. He stated, “This applied degree programme systematises the training of professionals in the gemstone and jewellery industry and further solidifies Hong Kong’s leading position in gemmology and jewellery education, testing and certification, research, and industry development. HKMU is committed to fostering close ties with industries to enable students to gain valuable experience and keep abreast of the latest technologies and professional knowledge through industry engagement and internships.”
