最新研资局高额资助项目

大学在研究资助局(研资局)新一轮「自资学位界别竞逐研究资助计划」中,获拨款逾1,610 万元,用以开展18个研究项目。当中除一项属「跨院校发展计划」外,其余项目均属「教员发展计划」,合共获批1,570 万元,款额为竞逐院校中最高。部分项目分别获批逾100 万元,其中一项获拨的金额更称冠「教员发展计划」!

提升纸芯片检测细菌和毒性的准确度

科技学院陈键林博士领导的项目获批最多拨款,此项目旨在改善一种愈来愈常用于测量细菌和毒性的设备的准确度。有见化学指示剂如「刃天青」固定到「纸基微流控芯片」后,还原速度远较处于游离溶液中缓慢,而个中机理未明,陈博士的项目将为这差异提供理论解释。

分析附生于红树品种「白骨壤」气根的微生物群落的生态功能

在环境科学领域,科技学院李宏发教授聚焦福田国家级自然保护区内一种愈来愈受到威胁的天然红树物种――「白骨壤」(Avicennia marina)。白骨壤的出水通气根附生了多样性丰富的微生物群落。通过分析这些微生物群落的结构,李教授的研究将阐明它们对维持白骨壤生机的作用,有助制定保护该物种的对策。

与此同时,本校的海洋和海岸研究工作最近有两项令人振奋的发展:一是都大成为了香港城市大学「海洋污染国家重点实验室」的成员院校之一;二是大学与福田国家级自然保护区管理局和深圳大学签署了框架协议,在福田保护区共同建设「大湾区红树林湿地研发中心」。这是本校继早前凭研资局拨款在校园内建立「大学研究设施」后,在相同范畴再迈进一步。

研发用于Python 编程课程的学习分析干预系统

在学习分析领域,李兆基商业管理学院蔡秉文博士尝试建构一个帮助学生学习 Python 编程的互动平台。这将是首个全面顾及学习分析周期各个阶段的平台―获取、报告、预测、行动和改进,并会利用强化学习技术进行学习干预,成为学习分析的示范模型。

以改良的多模态深度学习识别社交媒体中的谣言

另一个与机器学习相关的项目由科技学院李立基博士领导,项目的目标是识别社交媒体上的谣言。「多模态深度学习」是机器「学习」多模态数据的过程,例如提取社交媒体的文本和图像,由于机器提取不同类型数据的方式有差异,因此甚具挑战性。此研究项目将设计出一个能够融合不同模态数据的机器学习模型。

对资优青少年的抑郁症状进行跨文化研究

人文社会科学院张浩南博士致力从两个角度扩阔现时有关资优青少年抑郁症状的研究:一是收集跨文化的庞大样本,以解决过往研究过于集中美国数据的不足;二是将学术成绩不佳但认知能力强的人士加入研究,并把他们办识出来。研究结果将为未来追踪研究奠下重要基础。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
