都会大学与深圳两大机构合作 建立大湾区红树林湿地研发中心

香港都会大学与广东内伶仃福田国家级自然保护区管理局及深圳大学,在10月19日签订框架协议,共同建立「大湾区红树林湿地研发中心」(中心),促进深港合作和发展大湾区红树林湿地研究。

框架协议签署仪式由都大学术副校长关清平教授丶深圳大学副校长李永华教授,以及广东内伶仃福田国家级自然保护区管理局邓子兵局长签署,并由都大科技学院院长王富利教授丶谭凤仪讲座教授,以及科学学系系主任李宏发教授见证。

关清平教授表示:「本校於2019年获香港研究资助局拨款设立『粤港澳大湾区海岸湿地基础及应用研究中心实验室』,资助额达港币930万元,为全年同类成功申请拨款的项目中最高,彰显大学在粤港澳大湾区海岸湿地基础及应用研究中的潜力。期望是次合作能进一步促进深港科研交流,共同完善大湾区红树林等湿地研究。」

中心立足後海湾(深圳湾),旨在发展先进的开放式科研中心,打造成设施先进丶机制灵活丶人才优秀的科研平台,同时促进深港两地研究人员的合作交流,推动湿地资源保护丶重要海洋生物和生态环境等领域的研究发展。中心亦将探索保护与修复滨海湿地技术,研究红树林湿地的生态系统,提升粤港澳大湾区滨海湿地的生态环境,并致力推动湿地的保育管理和宣传教育工作 。

Hugo Leung Wai-yin, who graduated from his four-year programme in 2015, won the Best Paper Award for his ‘intelligent pill-dispenser’ design at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineering’s International Conference on Consumer Electronics – China 2015.

The pill-dispenser alerts patients via sound and LED flashes to pre-set dosage and time intervals. Unlike units currently on the market, Hugo’s design connects to any mobile phone globally. In explaining how it works, he said: ‘There are three layers in the portable pillbox. The lowest level is a controller with various devices which can be connected to mobile phones in remote locations. Patients are alerted by a sound alarm and flashes. Should they fail to follow their prescribed regime, data can be sent via SMS to relatives and friends for follow up.’ The pill-dispenser has four medicine slots, plus a back-up with a LED alert, topped by a 500ml water bottle. It took Hugo three months of research and coding to complete his design, but he feels it was worth all his time and effort.

Hugo’s public examination results were disappointing and he was at a loss about his future before enrolling at the OUHK, which he now realizes was a major turning point in his life. He is grateful for the OUHK’s learning environment, its industry links and the positive guidance and encouragement from his teachers. The University is now exploring the commercial potential of his design with a pharmaceutical company. He hopes that this will benefit the elderly and chronically ill, as well as the society at large.

Soon after completing his studies, Hugo joined an automation technology company as an assistant engineer. He is responsible for the design and development of automation devices. The target is to minimize human labor and increase the quality of products. He is developing products which are used in various sections, including healthcare, manufacturing and consumer electronics.
