Programme description

This programme provides students with a solid foundation in English language proficiency with a focus on communicative effectiveness for the workplace and/or for further study. Through their studies towards the Certificate, they will develop the ability to read with understanding and to write clear, accurate and effective English. Students will learn how to focus their listening skills and to speak English convincingly and persuasively. They will also have the opportunity to acquire an internationally recognised qualification in English for study purposes – the IELTS test.


Programme requirements

Students admitted to the programme are required to successfully complete at least 18 credit-units as follows:

(a) 18 credit-units of core courses from Table 1.

Choosing the first courses to get started

Students should start with one of the 1000-level (ENGL 1070EED English for Post-secondary Study, or ENGL 1110EED English for Effective Communication I: Listening and Speaking, or ENGL 1120EED English for Effective Communication I: Reading and Writing) before moving on to the 2000-level courses such as ENGL 2200EED, ENGL 2210EED and ENGL 2205EED.
