4,000 people in need will be benefited from the protection packs donated by the OUHK.
In light of the ongoing threat of novel coronavirus (COVID-19), The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) organized earlier an activity named "Fight Against Virus in Unity and Love 2020". A total of 4,000 bags of "COVID-19 Protection Pack", comprising various kinds of protective items, were prepared and will be donated to the non-profit organization St. James' Settlement and five elderly nursing homes, helping people with chronic illnesses or in rehabilitation, low-income groups and the elderly.
OUHK has always been committed to caring about the needs of our community. With its expertise and connections in the community, the School of Nursing and Health Studies initiated this meaningful activity with the concept of the goodie bag. It aimed to send blessings to the underprivileged groups and support them in combating COVID-19.
The protection packs comprise face masks, alcohol hand sanitizers, disinfecting wipes and health information cards designed by the nursing students etc. In earlier time, OUHK President Prof. Wong Yuk-Shan, Provost Prof. Reggie Kwan Ching-ping, Vice President (Resources and Development) Prof. Lui Yu-hon, Vice President (Students and Support) Prof. Tong Chong-sze, Acting Dean of the School of Nursing and Health Studies Prof. Linda Lee Yin-king, nursing students and alumni showed their support in person to prepare the packs for distribution.
President Prof. Wong expressed that the University has closely monitored the latest development of the novel coronavirus infection and has taken different measures to cope with the situation, including strengthening cleaning and disinfection on campus, implementing online learning, and connecting with students online, etc. He was glad to see that members of the University joined hands to participate in the activity and care for the people in need. Prof. Wong said, "Our every little effort contributes to the society."
Prof. Linda Lee mentioned that the activity not only benefited the community, but also strengthened students’ sense of social responsibility. "The health information cards contain messages of proper way of wearing a mask and hand washing technique. Students tried to use simple graphics in the design to convey the message to help the elderly understand the contents more easily." Moreover, the School has produced videos on the tips on personal hygiene before.
All the bags of "COVID-19 Protection Pack" will be distributed to the NGO and elderly nursing homes in early April. The representative of St. James' Settlement remarked that the packs will be distributed to their specific target group as a means of support in this difficult time.
