Distinguished guests officiate at the Opening Ceremony of the OUHK Creative Arts Graduation Show 2021.
Creative Arts students of The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) present over a hundred creative artworks at an annual graduation exhibition themed “Recollection of my rough edges”. The showcase runs at the OUHK Jockey Club campus until 26 July.
The graduation exhibition was unveiled at a ceremony and screening on 16 July, officiating guests were Chief Executive Officer of Cyberport Yan King-shun, General Secretary of the Hong Kong Animation and Cultural Association Lo Che-ying, OUHK Council Chairman Michael Wong Yick-kam, President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing, Provost Prof. Reggie Kwan Ching-ping, Vice President (Students & Support) Prof. Ricky Kwok Yu-kwong, Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences Prof. Charles Kwong Che-leung, Head of Creative Arts cum Associate Professor of the OUHK School of Arts and Social Sciences Dr Rebecca Leung Mo-ling, Chairman of the Organizing Committee of the OUHK Graduation Show of Creative Arts Janet Law Man-ying and Chairman of the Student Organizing Committee of the OUHK Graduation Show of Creative Arts Chung Wai-Chun.
Addressing guests at the opening ceremony, Chung Wai-chun, Chairman of the Student Organizing Committee of the OUHK Graduation Show of Creative Arts also elaborated on the exhibition theme. “'Edges' are uneven and unpolished, representing the characteristics of fresh graduates,” he said. “The shape of the edges may change as we grow older, yet as long as we are responsible for ourselves and remember our true nature, we can march fearlessly forward. In face of the continuing pandemic this year, my fellow students managed to complete their works under difficult circumstances. I believe this is the best proof of the recollection of my tough edges.”
Following instant voting by ceremony attendees, three “Audience Choice” awards and five “Creative Arts” awards were presented to students to recognize their outstanding works and encourage them to pursue careers in the creative industries.
The annual OUHK Graduation Show of Creative Arts is an important platform for students to demonstrate their learning achievements. It features the artworks of students graduating from the Department of Creative Arts' five Bachelor's degree programmes: Creative Writing and Film Arts; Animation and Visual Effects; Imaging Design and Digital Art; Creative Advertising and Media Design; and Computing and Interactive Entertainment. The exhibition encompasses works completed in a wide array of media, from animation, film, photography and writing to interactive installations using advanced technology.
There are many remarkable works this year, reflecting the creativity and professional skills of OUHK students. Animation projects by Animation and Visual Effects students included Granny, which depicts the meaning of life and death through a grandmother-granddaughter relationship, while Oh Bare, about a bear with a hole in its body, shares the message of embracing one's flaws. Students of the Computing and Interactive Entertainment programme variously used virtual reality (VR) and eye-tracking technology to design a driving game, VR Driving School, and augmented reality (AR) technology to create an interactive OUHK JCC 4/F AR Campus Tour.
Among the other inspirational creative works are Reflection, an expanded imaging project by Imaging Design and Digital Art students on the theme of the global pandemic; The Owl in Concrete Jungle, a brand-building advertisement for pharmaceutical company Ryukakusan by students of Creative Advertising and Media Design; and Linger in the Dark, a documentary produced by Creative Writing and Film Arts students that explores the evocative beauty of cinematography.
Members of the public are welcome to visit the Graduation Show. Admission is free.

It also signifies the University's path of transformation from a modest distance education institution to a full-fledged university and reflects its unique characteristics and strategic focuses.
