This year’s HKDSE candidates faced unprecedented challenges when taking their examinations during the COVID-19 pandemic.  To provide an opportunity for those who performed below par in one core subject to enter university and choose their preferred programme for further studies, Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) has adopted a flexible admissions arrangements this year.
Except for nursing and health studies-related programmes, the  new arrangements will apply to all candidates who wish to apply for 2022/23 HKMU undergraduate programmes under the “Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors” (SSSDP) via the Joint University Programmes Admissions System (JUPAS).  Under the new arrangements, JUPAS applicants who fail to achieve Level 3 in either Chinese or English may still be considered by HKMU, provided that they attain a score of not lower than Level 2 in the subject in which they underperformed; and if they achieved a Level 5* or above in one other category A subject.  The candidates' total HKDSE score must still meet the minimum expected admission score of their preferred programme, and they must place the programme in their Band A choice in JUPAS and pass an interview.
HKMU Provost Prof. Reggie Kwan Ching-ping said, “This year, DSE candidates faced great pressure when taking the public examinations amid the outbreak of the fifth COVID wave, which might have affected their performance.  However, examinations are only part of life. By offering flexibility in our admissions arrangements, we hope to provide study paths for the candidates who performed well overall, but failed to reach the minimum entrance requirements, and to unleash their potential.”
HKMU launched the “HKDSE Star Scholarships” earlier to recognize the outstanding academic performance of DSE candidates and talented new students.  Students who attain 5* or 5** in any category A subject in the HKDSE and are admitted to HKMU degree programmes through the JUPAS scheme will be awarded a HK$40,000 scholarship for each subject.  HKMU also offers a variety of prestigious entrance scholarships for other JUPAS applicants and outstanding athletes.  Each scholarship recipient will receive up to HK$120,000.
