Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) welcomes the appointment of Dr Eddy Fong Ching as Pro-Chancellor, succeeding Dr the Honourable Charles Lee Yeh-kwong, who held the position since 2013. Dr Fong's new appointment is for a term of three years, commencing 1 November 2023.

Dr Fong, currently a member of the University Court, has a deep connection with HKMU. He joined the University Council in 2003 and assumed the role of Treasurer the following year. From 2009 to 2016, he served as the Chairman of the Council. Dr Fong has made significant contributions in the fields of accounting, finance, economics and philanthropy. Since the 1990s, he has been actively involved in public affairs, serving various organisations. From 2006 to 2012, he held the position of Chairman of the Securities and Futures Commission. In recognition of his outstanding achievements and remarkable contribution to the development of the University and society, HKMU honoured Dr Fong with a Doctor of Social Sciences honoris causa in 2017.

Dr Fong expressed his gratitude for the appointment, stating, “As a longstanding member of HKMU, I have witnessed the University's remarkable growth over the years. Today, it stands as a thriving and innovative comprehensive University, delivering high-quality education and fostering diverse talent. The University's strong foundation and ongoing prosperity are attributable to the concerted efforts of its Council members, management, staff, students and alumni. With our shared vision and goals, I am committed to collaborating with all stakeholders in the University community to realise our vision and contribute to the advancement of higher education in Hong Kong. Together, we will strive for even greater success for HKMU.”

Council Chairman Ir Dr Conrad Wong Tin-cheung praised Dr Fong for his significant contribution to the University. He said, “During Dr Fong's tenure as Chairman of the Council, the University experienced robust development and successfully acquired government land for two campuses to expand its educational and research facilities. The construction of the Jockey Club Campus and the Jockey Club Institute of Healthcare Campus is a testament to Dr Fong's invaluable efforts.” Ir Dr Wong said he eagerly looks forward to collaborating with Dr Fong to advance the University further and embrace a brighter future.

President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing commended Dr Fong as a role model for society. He said, “Dr Fong possesses outstanding leadership and management abilities, coupled with a strong commitment to public welfare and a deep concern for our country. I firmly believe that his positive attitude and selfless dedication will inspire more young people, motivating them to become leaders with integrity and talent, as well as a sense of social responsibility, enabling them to have a meaningful impact by contributing to our country and Hong Kong society. Under Dr Fong's guidance, I look forward to the University reaching new heights in its development journey.”

Ir Dr Wong and Prof. Lam sincerely thanked the outgoing Pro-Chancellor, Dr the Honourable Charles Lee Yeh-kwong, for his valued contribution to the University over the past decades. They also expressed their appreciation for Dr Lee's wisdom, foresight and astute leadership, which helped the University establish an excellent reputation and lay a solid foundation for its future development.
