A team of students from the School of Science and Technology (S&T) participated in the IFMA Inter-Institutional Competition on Best Facility Management Project Presentation 2024 organised by the International Facility Management Association (IFMA) Hong Kong Chapter. The team made it to the final round and won the Platinum Award, the highest prize, among seven finalist teams from six local universities or institutions.

Supervised by Assistant Professor Ir Dr Jimmy LI Chi-ho, the winning project, “Digital Twin (Mixed Reality) Adoption for Improving Training and Inspection Processes in New Buildings”, applies a Digital Twin model using Mixed Reality (MR) technology to simulate the process of new building inspection. It comes with an MR platform to train property management practitioners in new building inspection and provide them with guidance on improving inspection efficiency. It is a collaboration with Hong Yip Service Company Ltd., which signed a Memorandum of Understanding with S&T to strengthen study support and training for civil and building engineering students and graduates. Hong Yip is going to apply the MR platform in the training of practitioners and the inspection processes of their new residential buildings. The technology has been fine-tuned to fit the standards of both Hong Kong and China, and has been filed for a patent application.

The team then brought the project to two entrepreneurship competitions, the 10th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association and the 7th China Vocational Education Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition by the China Vocational Education Association, coming away with a Merit Prize for the Entrepreneurship Proposal category and a Special Prize respectively.

The IFMA Inter-Institutional Competition on Best Facility Management Project Presentation was first launched in 2011 and has since become one of the Hong Kong Chapter’s annual events with great success. This competition serves as a platform for young professionals to connect, learn, and advance their careers in the field of facility management.
