Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) announced a new organisational structure to reflect its strategic development and to further enhance its planning and management capabilities, with the appointment of Prof. Alan Au Kai-ming as Vice President (Strategic Initiatives) and Prof. Charles Kwong Che-leung as Vice President (Administration and Corporate Development). They will assume their new roles on 1 July and 1 September 2024, respectively.

HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing said that the University has grown rapidly in recent years and that the new organisational structure will inject new impetus into the University, strengthen the leadership team, and promote the development of teaching and research. He congratulated Prof. Au and Prof. Kwong on their appointments and said, “Prof. Au and Prof. Kwong are outstanding academics and administrators, with extensive expertise and industry connections, who have made significant contributions to the University. I firmly believe that they will drive the University to even greater heights.”

Vice President (Strategic Initiatives)
Prof. Alan Au Kai-ming will take up the newly established position of Vice President (Strategic Initiatives), where he will provide leadership in the areas of Mainland China and international affairs, planning and analysis, and new initiatives (including the University of Applied Sciences), as well as overseeing the operations of relevant subsidiaries of the University.

Prof. Au is the current Dean of the Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration (B&A) at HKMU. With almost 29 years of experience at the University, he has spearheaded and implemented a number of strategic initiatives and projects in the School of B&A in line with the University's mission and goals, including most notably, the introduction of an integrated curriculum in undergraduate business programmes and the development of the Global Immersion Programmes. Under his leadership, the School of B&A has fostered international academic collaboration with over 20 universities and other educational institutions in 12 countries and forged impactful strategic partnerships in various industries.

Prof. Au's areas of specialisation include business ethics, international management, technology transfer and marketing. He has published widely in international refereed journals and engaged in numerous consultancy projects for the Hong Kong Government and various public and private organisations. He is also actively involved in professional and public service and is currently a Fellow of the Chartered Governance Institute (CGI) in the United Kingdom and the Hong Kong Chartered Governance Institute (HKCGI), where he serves as Chairman and holds other key positions on committees.

Vice President (Administration and Corporate Development)
With effect from 1 September 2024, the existing Vice President (Resources and Development) will be retitled Vice President (Administration and Corporate Development). In this role, Prof. Charles Kwong Che-leung will be responsible for overseeing facilities management, finance, human resources, information technology and university library affairs.

Prof. Kwong is the current Dean of the School of Arts and Social Sciences at HKMU and has dedicated over 28 years of service to the University. As a seasoned academic administrator, he has successfully secured a number of government funds to promote the development of teaching and research at the University, including obtaining a grant of HK$33 million under the Enhancement and Start-up Grant Scheme for Self-financing Post-secondary Education (ESGS) to launch a new programme and upgrade laboratories and equipment, and a grant of HK$5.79 million for the Institutional Development Project to establish the Public and Social Policy Research Centre.

Prof. Kwong has been widely engaged in research and publications covering areas of China's macroeconomic reforms and economic development, focusing on its banking and financial systems. He has also been actively engaged in professional and community service. He has served on a number of committees in the Education Bureau of the HKSAR Government and the Hong Kong Examinations and Assessment Authority since 2003. He is also an Assessment Panel Member for the Chief Executive's Award for Teaching Excellence and an Executive Committee Member of the Hong Kong Economic Association.

Vice President (Research and Institutional Advancement)
Prof. Ricky Kwok Yu-kwong, currently Vice President (Research and Student Development), will be retitled Vice President (Research and Institutional Advancement), with effect from 1 September 2024. He will provide leadership for the advancement of learning and teaching, development and alumni affairs, public affairs, research affairs and knowledge transfer, and student affairs.

Senior Advisor to President
Prof. Lui Yu-hon, the current Vice President (Resources and Development), will assume the role of Senior Advisor to President, with effect from 1 September 2024. He will continue to oversee the development of the new campus, student accommodation and other projects until his retirement in early 2025. Prof. Lui joined the University in 1998 and has held his current position since 2020.

President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing expressed deep gratitude to Prof. Lui for his outstanding contributions and accomplishments during his tenure as Vice President.
