The Inter-College Music Association (ICMA) is the largest music association in the tertiary education sector. It holds the ICMA Intercollegiate Singing Competition annually to provide an avenue for students passionate about singing and interested in the music industry to go under the limelight. The competition consists of five rounds, including preliminary, semi-final, intercollege, repechage and final. In the preliminary round, the three highest scorers from each team represent their institutions in the semi-finals, in which the seven highest-scoring institutional teams advance to the intercollege round. There are 12 places in the finals, three of which are given to the highest-scoring institutional team, two to the second-highest-scoring team, and the remaining five to each of the five remaining teams from the intercollege round. The finals are divided into two sub-rounds. In the first sub-round, the 12 contestants compete in one-on-one battles, producing winners who then compete for the top three prizes. HKMU made it to the seven institutional finalists, enabling Zoe to enter the finals from the intercollege round.
