Three artworks created by student Icarus Wang Peng, in the creative advertising and media design programme, were shortlisted in overseas contests.

Icarus created a series of posters in response to the theme “You can't spell Slovenia without love and that is why you must love it” of the Young Drummers Competition 2024, the junior section of the Golden Drum Festival, organised by the Slovenian Advertising Chamber. It provided a platform for creative communicators under 30 to find inspiration, develop creative skills, gain industry insights, and explore issues and ideas that will shape the industry's future. Titled “Choose Slovenia, choose love”, the posters present a selection of Slovenia's tourist attractions, in which the heart shape is featured in the form of CAPTCHA image grids, prompting the audience to “choose love” by visiting Slovenia. Icarus is the only student to have made the shortlist in the competition.

Another shortlisted work was a typography design, “Chinese Character Deconstruction”, submitted to the 2025 Typography Competition by Communication Arts. Icarus deconstructed the Chinese word “悲”, which means sadness, and reorganised it in a modern glyph that looks like a crying human face. Communication Arts, an international trade journal of visual communication, runs six juried competitions providing year-round coverage of interactive media, illustration, photography, design, typography and advertising to allow visual communicators worldwide to promote their work.

Inspired by the 50th anniversary of hip-hop music, Icarus created a poster centred on a “Crown” image formed by lines in yellow, red and green, the colours of the Jamaican Rastafari social movement. He took it to the 19th International Biennale of Theatre Poster Rzeszów 2024, which shortlisted it in the top 100. The Biennale was founded in 1985 and is recognised by the International Council of Design as one of the world's most important theatre poster festivals.
