Alumnus Edgar NG Lap-hei was graduated from the Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Creative Writing and Film Arts in 2016. With his dedication in Cantonese Opera, he was presented with the ‘Award for Young Artist (Xiqu)’ by the Hong Kong Arts Development Council at its ‘The 14th Hong Kong Arts Development Awards’.

The Hong Kong Arts Development Awards is an annual flagship event in the local arts scene. Every year, various awards are presented to distinguished artists and practitioners in recognition of their accomplishments and contributions to the arts development of Hong Kong.

Edgar has been fond of Cantonese Opera since childhood. He has begun performing on stage at the age of 9. Graduated from The Cantonese Opera Academy of Hong Kong, Edgar has been a multiple winner of awards in Cantonese operatic competitions, including the 2011 Hong Kong Youth Cultural and Arts Competition. Because of this affection for the performing arts, he joined the OUHK’s Creative Arts full time programme in 2012 and performed in the University’s Cantonese Opera Night in 2014. The programme has been an eye-opening experience for him, in which he learned to appreciate literary and cinematic or visual art works, attempted different genres of writing, and thought about the direction of Cantonese operatic development. He even applied the knowledge acquired in class to his performance to help increase the charm of the show.

After graduation, Edgar has been working in the performing arts sector since graduation. He wishes to contribute to the inheritance of Cantonese Opera through his performance. It is hoped thathe will continue to shine on stage and add vibrancy to the art world.
