Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) established "Hong Kong Metropolitan University Alumni Association Limited" (HKMUAA) earlier as an official platform to bring alumni and alumni groups together and rally support for the University's development.
Established by the Government in 1989, HKMU is now the largest self-financed university in Hong Kong. In addition to offering quality full-time undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes, HKMU has been committed to providing distance learning education. Currently, the number of alumni exceeds 160,000.
Following the University's retitling last year, a comprehensive review of the structure of its alumni bodies was conducted, and the new HKMUAA was officially established in September this year to strengthen communication and connections with HKMU alumni. As the only official alumni body formed by the University, the Association will have an Executive Committee operated by alumni representatives for coordinating alumni affairs, and fostering alumni relationships and exchanges.
The Board of Directors of the HKMUAA is composed partly of University management and chaired by Prof. Lui Yu-hon, Vice President (Resources and Development). After nearly a year of preparation, Prof. Lui was delighted to witness the official establishment of the HKMUAA. He said, "Alumni are a valuable resource for the University. The HKMUAA aims to unite all HKMU alumni, strengthen their connection and enhance their sense of belonging to their alma mater, thereby fostering a spirit of passing on the torch."
"Our alumni have accumulated extensive working and personal experience in a wide range of industries and fields after graduation. We hope that our outstanding alumni can share their workplace experience in career talks, participate in mentorship programmes, and offer internship or career opportunities to students in different schools and programmes," added Prof. Lui.
Mr Calvin Wong, a Chinese Language and Literature graduate, is the first President of the HKMUAA Executive Committee. He said, "The HKMUAA serves as a bridge between alumni, alumni groups and the University. We aim to unite the alumni by organizing an array of activities and services. We also plan to provide support to HKMU students in their career development, and deepen the community's understanding of the University."
To further the development of alumni affairs and to strengthen support for the HKMUAA and the alumni community, the University will expand the Alumni Affairs Unit of the Public Affairs Office and encompass its fundraising functions to form a new Development and Alumni Affairs Office, effective from 1 October 2022. The new office will be responsible for coordinating alumni affairs and resource development.
Meanwhile, the University has launched a brand new alumni identity proof system in the form of a mobile application, called "HKMU Alumni+", to offer one-stop alumni services, including participating in activities, enjoying diverse services and privileges, keeping abreast of University developments and alumni affairs, and updating personal information.
