Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) and Hong Kong Cyberport Management Company Limited (Cyberport) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 27 February to foster collaboration in applied research in digital entertainment, smart city and smart living, and to support talent cultivation in innovation and entrepreneurship, and student career development.

Witnessed by Prof. Sun Dong, Secretary for Innovation, Technology and Industry of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government, Mr Tony Wong Chi-kwong, Commissioner for Digital Policy of the HKSAR Government, Mr Ye Shui-qiu, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technological Affairs of the Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the HKSAR, Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing, HKMU President and Mr Simon Chan Sai-ming, Chairman of Cyberport, the MoU was signed by Prof. Ricky Kwok Yu-kwong, HKMU Vice President (Research and Institutional Advancement) and Dr Rocky Cheng Chung-ngam, CEO of Cyberport.

Prof. Lam expressed his excitement about the partnership, stating “This MoU with Cyberport opens new horizons for HKMU to integrate academic excellence with real-world innovation. Leveraging Cyberport's cutting-edge resources and vibrant ecosystem, we are poised to empower our researchers and students to contribute to Hong Kong's development as an international innovation and technology (I&T) hub.”

The signing took place at the AI Action Summit 2025 (Hong Kong Branch) – AI STR (Safety, Trust, and Responsibility) Forum, which brought together global experts and industry leaders to address AI security, trust and governance challenges, to balance safe innovation and to promote industry safety standards.

Under the MoU, HKMU and Cyberport will facilitate exchanges between the University's faculties and Cyberport's I&T startups to drive collaborative applied research in digital entertainment, smart city and smart living.

The partnership also aims to cultivate talent by encouraging HKMU students and alumni to participate in Cyberport's diverse incubation programmes and events, and Cyberport will support HKMU's entrepreneurship and career development initiatives. Leveraging support and resources from I&T companies in Cyberport, HKMU students are expected to benefit from more internship opportunities and support for entrepreneurial projects, supporting their future career development.
