Co-organised by Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU), the Hong Kong Parliamentary Debating Society (HKPDS) and the Hong Kong Finance Association, the 20th Hong Kong Parliamentary Debating Society Summer Workshop and Tournament 2024 was successfully held from 4 to 11 August. It attracted about 200 participants from different countries and regions around the world, including Hong Kong, the Mainland, Macau, Korea, Singapore, Vietnam, UK, Canada, and the US.

Officiated at the opening ceremony on 4 August were Permanent Secretary for Education of the HKSAR Government Michelle Li, JP, Hong Kong Finance Association Chairman and HKMU Court member Michael Ngai, and HKMU Provost Prof. Reggie Kwan Ching-ping. Addressing the opening ceremony, Michelle Li expressed her appreciation to the co-organisers and highlighted the importance of the event as a platform for young debaters to learn and foster bonds. She emphasised Hong Kong's commitment to education, its aspiration to become an international education hub, and its dedication to nurturing biliterate and trilingual students. She encouraged the young debaters to immerse themselves in the training, apply what they learn, and take their debating talent to the next level.

In his welcoming remarks, HKMU Provost Prof. Reggie Kwan Ching-ping highlighted the importance of debate as a societal tool, giving voice to all sections of society and fostering leadership, creativity and critical thinking among students. He stressed that engaging in formal debating makes students knowledgeable about the world around them, teaching them to question assumptions and critically examine narratives. He concluded by encouraging all trainers and trainees to work harmoniously during the eight-day event to achieve transformational changes and celebrate the 20th anniversary of the summer debate camp.

The eight-day event included an intensive series of activities and attracted about 200 local and overseas individuals. It featured experienced trainers from top universities worldwide to coach the participants and refine their oratory skills. The event was a great success, with the participants appreciating the art of debate and learning about the power of critical thinking through devoted participation.

Wrapping up the event, HKMU Vice President (Research and Student Development) Prof. Ricky Kwok Yu-kwong praised the participants for their commitment throughout the gruelling debate training. He thanked the Hong Kong Parliamentary Debating Society and the Hong Kong Finance Association for co-organising the event and encouraged the participants to regard debate as a marathon race and to continue to explore similar training and tournaments to improve their debating prowess.
