Presided over by HKMU Pro-Chancellor Dr Eddy Fong Ching, Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) held its Honorary Degrees Ceremony 2023 today (12 December), conferring Honorary Degrees upon four distinguished persons: Prof. Sophia Chan Siu-chee, Dr Roy Chung Chi-ping, Mr Daryl Ng Win-kong, and Mr Michael Wong Yick Kam.

Addressing the ceremony, HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing commended the four Honorary Degree recipients for their shared dedication to the greater good. “Each of you has been totally committed to making Hong Kong a better place in very practical ways.  You have given your time, your energy, your skills and your lives to create something bigger than yourselves,” he said.

Speaking on the development of HKMU, Prof. Lam highlighted its remarkable recruitment statistics. This year, the University has seen a 35% increase in the number of new undergraduate students compared to last year, and the number of new taught postgraduate students has almost doubled. He attributed the rise in the number of new students, despite the decline in the number of secondary school graduates, to the University's commitment to ensuring that its programmes are meaningful and address genuine social needs. The programmes offer relevant skills, clear career paths, and a meaningful future to the students.

“Across the board, we are positioning HKMU very clearly as a university that delivers high-quality professional degrees focused on practical applications of the arts, sciences and social sciences,” said Prof. Lam. “In this respect, we are taking valuable lessons from the very successful 'universities of applied sciences' that operate across Europe.”

Prof. Lam added that one of HKMU's important social goals is to help develop Hong Kong into an international innovation and technology centre. To make this happen, the University is playing its part by creating practical, innovative, technology-based research output. The University supports well-grounded research that has special local and regional relevance, and puts its trust in the huge potential of its talented staff and students to innovate and apply the research.
