The Health Expo, organised by the School of Nursing and Health Studies (“the School”) at Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU), took place today at Kwun Tong Yue Man Square. With “fall prevention” as its theme, the expo featured health screening services provided by teachers and students from the School, as well as health talks by guest speakers and professors, to promote health awareness among the general public.

The launch ceremony was officiated by HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-Sing, Principal Nursing Officer of the Department of Health Ms Lucia Ko Siu-shan and Legislative Council Member (Medical and Health Services) Dr Hon David Lam Tzit-yuen. Guests included Zone Commander of the Auxiliary Medical Service Cadet Corps Kowloon West Zone and Cardiologist Dr Raymond Fung Chi-yan, Specialist in Ophthalmology Dr Jeffrey Pong Chiu-fai, Director of The University of Hong Kong Primary Health Care Academy Prof. Sophia Chan Siu-chee, President of the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing Prof. Chair Sek-ying, President of the Hong Kong College of Community and Public Health Nursing Ms Kathy Cheung Yuk-hung, and Secretary General of the Hong Kong Physiotherapy Association Mr Andy Yu.

Addressing the ceremony, HKMU President Prof. Lam emphasised that HKMU has been offering nursing programmes since 1994, providing training for nursing professionals in different areas and levels, and has trained over 10,000 nurses and other medical professionals so far. In addition to teaching, the University is concerned about community health and aims to help make Hong Kong a healthier city.

“Today's event is a meaningful occasion, with nursing students, led by teachers, moving from the classroom into the community to conduct health assessments for citizens and walk with the public on the road to health!” said Prof. Lam. The University has been encouraging students to serve and give back to society with what they have learned by participating actively in community service.

The expo was well received, with about 100 nursing and physiotherapy students from the School providing a wide range of health screening and community health services for over hundreds of participants. The services included checking the participants' body mass index, blood pressure, glucose, hand grip strength, eyesight and macular degeneration, as well as testing balance by having participants stand on a chair and stand on one leg, measuring calf circumference and conducting timed up-and-go tests. The participants could also receive a body fat analysis and a health consultation. Also part of the programme were a series of health talks by HKMU professors and doctors covering topics on community health, age-related macular degeneration, cardiovascular disease causing falls among the elderly, and nutrition. Physiotherapists were on site to demonstrate stretching exercises, and registered nurses were available to answer health questions to address common health problems faced by the general public.
