This year marks the third academic year under the COVID-19 pandemic. As the pandemic is slowing down, Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) will resume face-to-face classes in September. The University held a series of campus life induction activities on 17 and 18 August to welcome new students to the HKMU family and prepare them for their upcoming campus life. President Prof. Lam Kwan-sing extended a warm welcome to the new students and wrote his wishes to them on an Ema: “Realize your creativity and potential, and enjoy your campus life at HKMU!”

Over 1,500 freshmen participated in the two-day orientation activities, creating a joyful atmosphere on campus. Prof. Lam interacted with the new students and encouraged them to broaden their horizons and enrich their experience by actively participating in various activities and enjoying the vibrant campus life. All the freshmen were immensely interested in the activities and eager to learn more about campus life. They also took photos with the President.

Organized by the Student Affairs Office, the orientation event covered a wide array of activities, such as the Student Societies Fun Fair, featuring about 30 student societies to introduce activities on campus; guided campus tours to familiarize the students with the campuses; service-learning experiential activities; and a counselling service booth to find out about the needs of new students. Career talks were also arranged to give the freshmen a head-start on their life planning and career development.

The Student Affairs Office organized the first Metropolitan Cup this year, with athletes from 12 institutions competing against each other in four-a-side football and 3×3 basketball. The semi-finals and finals were held on the last two days as part of the orientation programme. Prof. Lam gave encouragement to the HKMU athletes during the games and urged the students to study hard and stay active and healthy.
