Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) achieved a 15% year-on-year increase in the number of new students admitted to its full-time undergraduate programmes via JUPAS. This encouraging result in the 2022/23 academic year reflects the competitiveness of the programmes offered by the University in meeting the needs of students and society, and recognition of the University’s teaching and learning quality.

Given the continued decline in the number of HKDSE students, it is encouraging to see an increase of 15% in our admission number via JUPAS, said President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing, who believes that the heartening result is related to the University’s provision of high quality and practical professional programmes that meet society’s demand for talent. It also indicates that the University’s strategic goals of developing quality education and enriching the students’ learning experience are supported by the community.

In the new round of the “Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions/Sectors for Undergraduate Programmes” (SSSDP), announced by the Education Bureau recently, HKMU was granted 1,255 places in 2023/24 academic year, and this number is the highest among all self-financed institutions. Prof. Lam said, “This is obviously an affirmation by the Government of the quality of the University’s programmes, as well as a testament to our efforts and achievements in teaching.”

Four new HKMU programmes will be included in the SSSDP in the coming academic year: the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Medical Laboratory Science, the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Building Services Engineering and Sustainable Development, the Bachelor of Engineering with Honours in Civil Engineering, and the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Computer Science. Among these four, the Bachelor of Science with Honours in Medical Laboratory Science is a brand new programme to nurture medical laboratory technologists in response to the pressing demand for medical professionals in the community.

To recognize new students with outstanding performance, a Welcoming Ceremony for Entrance Scholarships Recipients was held by the University today (28 September) to share their joy of joining the HKMU family. HKMU Council Chairman Ir Dr Conrad Wong Tin-cheung and Council Member Yvonne Choi Ying-pik shared their wealth of life experience in a dialogue with the students on the topic “Achieving Excellence and Overcoming Adversity”. They encouraged students to set goals and work hard for a bright future.

HKMU set up various entrance scholarships this year, including HKDSE star scholarship, JUPAS entrance scholarship, athlete entrance scholarship, and JUPAS entrance scholarship for physiotherapy students. A total of 103 new students were awarded entrance scholarships.

Some students received both the JUPAS Entrance Scholarship and the HKDSE Star Scholarship this year. Among them is Darwin Tsoi Hing-chung, a nursing (General) student, who commended that the HKMU nursing programmes are practical and widely recognized, and that their content is well developed, as the University has been offering nursing education for 28 years. He also enjoys the diversity of the University life. He said, “I was so touched that the University organized a wide array of activities at the beginning of the semester to help freshmen integrate and adapt to University life.”
