Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) will confer honorary doctorates on five distinguished individuals in recognition of their valuable achievements and exceptional contribution to academia and society.
The recipients are Mr Chan Ka-kui, Dr Charles Chen Yidan, Ms Katie Shu Sui-pui, Prof. Joseph Ting Sun-pao, and Mr Peter Wan Kam-to. The conferment ceremony will be held on 5 December (Monday).
The brief profiles of the five recipients are as follows (in alphabetical order):
Mr Chan Ka-kui, GBS, JP
(Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa)
Mr Chan Ka-kui, a Registered Professional Surveyor and successful contractor, is the former Chairman of the Construction Industry Council (CIC). He is a distinguished leader and a highly respected member of the construction industry.
During his tenure as Chairman of the CIC, Mr Chan led the Council to spearhead numerous bold initiatives to improve the industry, including introducing Modular Integrated Construction (MiC) technology in Hong Kong, jointly with the Development Bureau. With a genuine heart of caring for the construction industry, he initiated the Construction Industry Sports and Volunteering Programme, which encourages construction practitioners, especially front-line workers, to participate in sports activities and volunteer services so as to raise their quality of life and self-esteem.
Mr Chan was also instrumental in setting up the Hong Kong Institute of Construction (HKIC) in 2018. To nurture future generations of professionals in the construction industry, HKMU signed a Memorandum of Intent (MOI) with the HKIC in December 2021 to provide academic advancement opportunities for construction workers.
Dr Charles Chen Yidan

Dr Charles Chen Yidan, a world-renowned entrepreneur and philanthropist, is the co-founder and Advisor Emeritus of Tencent Holdings Ltd, one of the most successful internet companies in the world. As part of its commitment to corporate social responsibility, Tencent set up the Tencent Charity Foundation in 2007 and Dr Chen became its first Chairman. Known as the ‘Godfather of Internet Philanthropy in China’, Dr Chen has empowered internet users to get involved in charity work and share the joy of giving through the Foundation's philanthropy platform, Tencent Charity.
Committed to the cause of education, in 2013, Dr Chen set up his own philanthropic organisation, the Chen Yidan Foundation, to carry out numerous innovative charity projects to actively advance educational research and explore educational innovations. In 2016, Dr Chen founded the world's most endowed education prize in Hong Kong, the Yidan Prize, with the mission of advancing global social development and creating a better world through education.
Dr Chen’s passion for technology advances and his life-long commitment to philanthropy and education have impacted the world profoundly in many ways and brought hope to many people.
Ms Katie Shu Sui-pui
(Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa)
Ms Katie Shu Sui-pui is the founder and owner of Regal Fortune Limited, which specialises in property investment and management, covering residences, offices, retail shops and parking lots. With her business acumen, Ms Shu has led her company to sail through myriad challenges in the past 25 years.
A proud alumna of HKMU, Ms Shu has generously donated to her alma mater over the years. In 2012, she set up the Katie Shu Sui Pui Charitable Trust to pursue a number of very meaningful initiatives, which have had a far-reaching impact. In 2021, the Trust donated HK$20 million to the University to establish the ‘Katie Shu Sui Pui Endowment Fund’ to ensure the sustainable development of various initiatives, offering financial assistance to students, working fathers, prison inmates and outstanding researchers, and covering overseas and mainland study tours. The donations not only contribute to the development of the University, but also provide financial support to aspiring learners, putting the University's mission of “Education for All” into practice and helping to cultivate talent for society.
Prof. Joseph Ting Sun-pao, BBS
(Doctor of Letters, honoris causa)
Prof. Joseph Ting Sun-pao is a well-known historian of Chinese and Hong Kong history. He has committed his whole life in different capacities, as a curator, professor, writer and tour guide, to revitalise history education in Hong Kong. During his service in the museums, he played a vital role in establishing a number of new museums in Hong Kong.
Prof. Ting joined the Hong Kong Museum of Art as an Assistant Curator in 1979 and was appointed Chief Curator of the Hong Kong Museum of History in 1995. He retired in 2007 after serving for 28 years. Over the years, he was an important figure in the planning and implementation of the new Hong Kong Museum of History, the Hong Kong Museum of Coastal Defence and the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum.
A long-time friend of HKMU, he supported the Li Ka Shing School of Professional and Continuing Education in setting up the Professional Diploma in Community Museum Management and acts as a School Advisor.
Mr Peter Wan Kam-to, MH
(Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa)
Mr Peter Wan Kam-to is a distinguished and highly respected certified public accountant in Hong Kong and mainland China, with over 30 years of extensive experience in auditing and advisory work. As a Council member of HKMU from 2009 to 2014 and Treasurer from 2014 to 2022, he masterminded the set-up of a sound governance system and contributed tremendously to the introduction of the “Quality Enhancement Measures” Scheme in 2017, which has enabled the University's teaching and learning to reach the next level of excellence.
Mr Wan joined Coopers & Lybrand in 1975 and gradually moved up the ladder to become a partner. The firm merged with Pricewaterhouse and became PricewaterhouseCoopers, and Mr Wan remained a partner in the firm until his retirement.
In addition to serving on a number of committees for HKMU, Mr Wan has served as a member of the board of directors of several charitable and service organisations, including Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Heep Hong Society, which has strong ties with HKMU.
