Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) hosted the Inauguration Ceremony today (14 September) for its new full-time undergraduate students. This year, more than 3,500 students admitted into over 60 full-time undergraduate programmes offered by the University's five Schools, namely the School of Arts and Social Sciences, Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration, School of Education and Languages, School of Nursing and Health Studies, and School of Science and Technology.

Addressing at the Ceremony, President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing extended a warm welcome to all freshmen for starting a new stage at HKMU. He encouraged them to proactively take part in extra-curricular activities to broaden their horizons and enjoy a fruitful campus life. He also urged students to take good advantage of the many prospects offered by the University, such as exchange activities, student societies, and internship programmes, so as to learn communication skills, teamwork, how to set goals and time management, which will be beneficial for a lifetime.

Prof. Lam understands that there are always challenging moments in life. He pointed out that due to the social unrest and the pandemic, Hong Kong has experienced a turbulent past two years. He said more than ever, the society needs to work together to heal, rebuild trust, and look to the future. He further advised students, as a member of society, to verify information carefully before drawing any conclusion. “Living in the digital age with overflowing information, we must have clear, rational thinking based on facts and the good interpretation of data. We need to examine the world around us with an open mind and consider objectively both sides of an argument.”

In conclusion, Prof. Lam reminded students to seize every opportunity and make the best out of the four-year university life. “Here at HKMU, you have this golden chance to improve yourselves, make a better life, and prepare for an exciting career doing what you love. We will support you all the way,” he said.
