Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) welcomes the approval by the Town Planning Board (TPB) of an application submitted by the University for the use and development of a slope of land at the junction of Sheung Shing Street and Fat Kwong Street to build an academic complex. The University will next apply to the Government for a grant for the site to commence the construction of the new campus, and will maintain dialogue with relevant government departments to ensure that the new campus will benefit the University's development, students and the community.

HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing emphasised the importance of community health development in light of Hong Kong's ageing population. In response, the University plans to build a new campus, positioned as “A Hub for Community Health and Wellness”, to provide a range of educational programmes and activities aimed at addressing the needs of the ageing population and promoting overall community health. The new campus is targeted for completion and official opening in the third quarter of 2028.

“The new campus development plan will commence soon,” said Prof. Lam. “The University will actively carry out preparatory work to ensure that construction will take place soon after the Government grants us the site.”

In recent years, the University has seen rapid growth on all fronts, including a steady increase in student enrolment, various large-scale funded research projects ready to launch, and a growing amount of collaboration with the community. In view of the University's continued development and to provide quality education for its students, HKMU plans to expand its campus and upgrade its teaching facilities by making use of a slope of land at the junction of Sheung Shing Street and Fat Kwong Street in Ho Man Tin, adjacent to the HKMU main campus and the Jockey Club Institute of Healthcare, for the construction of a new campus.

The 19-storey building (plus a one-storey basement carpark) will occupy an area of about 3,403 square metres, providing the University with an additional gross floor area of approximately 30,660 square metres, equivalent to about 42% of the existing campus space. Two footbridges will be constructed to connect to Fat Kwong Street and Sheung Shing Street, providing safe and convenient access for teachers, students and the public.

The new campus will have community-, age- and environmentally friendly elements including restaurants, a clinic, a podium garden, activity spaces and footbridges. The building will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, such as gerontechnological laboratories, an integrated health clinic, and an interdisciplinary research centre. These facilities will support the development of healthcare services in the community by facilitating teaching, research and the promotion of community health and wellness.

HKMU has been carrying out extensive consultations and actively seeking opinions on the development of the new campus, which has garnered overwhelming support. The University has been diligent in updating and refining the project design based on the feedback received. Valuing community input, HKMU will continue to maintain close communication with relevant stakeholders to ensure that the project is aligned with the needs of both the University and the community.
