The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) unveiled the logo of “Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU)” today (28 June), signifying a new milestone in the University's development.
The University earlier appointed renowned designer Mr Alan Chan Yau-kin, Founder and Creative Director of Alan Chan Design Company, to design the new logo for the University.
OUHK President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing remarked at the press conference, “Over the past three decades, the OUHK has made remarkable progress on all fronts and laid a solid foundation for future development. The new title and logo will not only give the University a new image and inject new energy, but also mark our unique position in this global metropolis and symbolize our aspirations in the 21st century.”
Introducing the concept behind the logo design at the event, Mr Alan Chan said, “Hong Kong Metropolitan University is an innovative, diverse and progressive university. Its logo, therefore, should be forward-looking to demonstrate the vibrant and unique image of the University in this global metropolis.”
The logo has a simple and clear design, using the letters “M” and “U” from the abbreviation of the University title. “M” stands for “me”, which represents students, while “U” means “you”, which refers to everything surrounding the students, including their peers, teachers, community and society. HKMU serves as a platform connecting “me” and “you” and contains stories that belong to all students, who are closely related to their peers, the university and society. HKMU is committed to providing programmes to meet community interests and needs, sharing knowledge with our students, equipping them with valuable skills, and helping them to realize their full potential. Upon graduation, they will continue to excel, and become a driving force to promote social progress.
The logo uses the colours green and blue. In addition to representing our valued heritage, it reflects the breakthrough and transformation of the University, which has moved with the times and gone beyond its original boundaries to capture new opportunities and meet future challenges.
A designer, brand consultant and artist, Alan Chan and his team have built a wide portfolio of over 1,000 brands and won more than 600 local and international awards. Mr Chan said, “I did not go to university, and this is my first time to design a logo for a university. This task was a real challenge, but it also allowed me to think out of the box to help instil life and vibrancy in HKMU's image.”
“A logo may be just a symbol or a sign to the general public,” added Prof. Lam, “but I sincerely invite the University community to join hands with me to make a concerted effort to further our mission and vision to give real meaning to our new title and logo.”
