HKMU innovates microfluidics for real-time monitoring of the metabolic activity of food waste/sewage sludge anaerobic co-digestion to boost the generation of renewable energy

As public awareness of environmental protection grows in Hong Kong, food waste is becoming an increasing concern, thus creating demand for food waste recycling and reuse. If large amounts of food waste are not treated properly, it may contaminate the environment. The “anaerobic co-digestion” of food waste and sewage sludge produces biogas, but the biological activity of the digestion process requires close monitoring to ensure the smooth operation of “anaerobic digestion”, along with the production of biogas. Hong Kong Metropolitan University's (HKMU) School of Science and Technology has developed a “microfluidics analytical device” to monitor the bioactivity of “anaerobic digestion” in real time and learn about the impact of food waste on the “anaerobic digestion” of sewage sludge. Hence, it will help improve the efficiency of waste decomposition and generate renewable energy to convert waste into energy....

HKMU cricket team wins Plate Championship and ranked third in Joint University Tapeball Cricket Sixes

The HKMU cricket team, formed by 14 students from the Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration (B&A) and the School of Science and Technology, competed in the Joint University Tapeball Cricket Sixes for the second time and entered the Plate Final after two exciting matches. HKMU receives a grant worth over HK$37 million from the EDB to establish an Industrial Centre for new industrialisation and develop related programmes

Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) was awarded a grant worth over HK$37 million from the “Enhancement and Start-up Grant Scheme for Self-financing Post-secondary Education” (ESGS) of the Education Bureau (EDB) to set up an Industrial Centre for new industrialisation, develop a new programme and enhance the existing programmes. HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing said he believed that the establishment of the Industrial Centre would complement the Government's policy of promoting “New Industrialisation” and help nurture talent for industry....

Literary works of MA in Creative Writing students published

The literary works of a graduate and a student from the Master of Arts in Creative Writing programme were recently published in different channels. Fresh graduate Jiang Feng's experimental novel Hushtopia (噓托邦) was published in October 2023. It tells of an explorer who dies when trying to escape from a palace that he has mistakenly entered in the desert. His experience then attracts others to visit the desert and start their adventures. In the story, Jiang Feng adopts various cultural elements including Chinese classics such as the Yijing, Shijing, Book of Han, Journey to the West and Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, as well as the paintings of Manet, Caravaggio, Odilon Redon and Anselm Kiefer to reproduce the aura of classical art....
