School of Nursing and Health Studies organises community events for older people to promote awareness of fall prevention

To tie in with the Sai Kung Tseung Kwan O Respect for the Aged Festival, the HKMU School of Nursing and Health Studies, in collaboration with Sai Kung and Tseung Kwan O Women's Association Limited, organised a variety of community health events with the theme “Home Safety for the Elderly”, with the objective of training Care Teams to provide health screening services and conduct home fall-prevention assessments for older people in the district....

Long-term HKMU study reveals rising health risks of oral corticosteroid use in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are often prescribed oral corticosteroids (OCSs) if there is a sudden deterioration in their condition. A scholar of the School of Nursing and Health Studies at Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) and related research team conducted a long-term study that unveils an increased risk of 17 diseases, including cardiovascular disease, associated with OCS use for COPD. The research team recommended exploring alternative treatments to minimise the possible side effects of using OCSs to alleviate the condition....

School of Nursing and Health Studies receives volunteer service award for promoting HA Go app

From May to September 2023, the School of Nursing and Health Studies (N&HS) collaborated with the Health Resource Centre of the Prince of Wales Hospital for a “HA Go” Ambassador Service Programme aimed at encouraging patients to install the mobile app “HA Go”, which connects patients beyond hospital care and enables patients to manage their own health. Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU)'s School of Nursing and Health Studies received HK$20.3 million from The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust to support a project titled “Jockey Club 'BaMa Chill Club' Perinatal Support Project”. This winter will be the first influenza peak since the lifting of the compulsory mask-wearing requirement. HKMU and two partner institutions awarded a government grant of approximately HK$8 million to develop first cross-institutional VR game to enhance healthcare students' interprofessional communication skills

Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) is actively promoting the teaching and development of healthcare through innovation and technology. In collaboration with Caritas Institute of Higher Education (CIHE) and Tung Wah College (TWC), HKMU will develop a cross-institutional Virtual Reality (VR) simulation teaching game. The primary goal of the project is to enhance the interprofessional communication skills of approximately 2,800 undergraduate nursing and physiotherapy students from the three self-financing institutions to enable the students to deliver higher-quality healthcare services to patients in the future. The project received a grant of HK$7.97 million from the Quality Enhancement Support Scheme (QESS) under the Government's Self-financing Post-secondary Education Fund. The game is expected to be ready for classroom use in 2025 at the earliest....
