The Open University of Hong Kong officially signed the collaboration agreements with the Zhaoqing Municipal Government and Zhaoqing University to establish The Open University of Hong Kong (Zhaoqing).
The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) officially signed the collaboration agreements today (22 April) with the Zhaoqing Municipal Government and Zhaoqing University to establish The Open University of Hong Kong (Zhaoqing) (OUHK (ZQ)). The new University will foster the higher education development in the Greater Bay Area and enhance exchange and talent nurturing between Zhaoqing and Hong Kong. The collaboration marks a significant milestone for the OUHK, which will contribute to the educational and social advancement of the nation and Hong Kong.
In view of the outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the signing ceremony was held on a real-time online platform. The agreements were signed by Mr Lv Yuyin, Mayor of the People’s Government of Zhaoqing Municipality; Prof. Wu Yechun, President of Zhaoqing University; and Prof. Yuk-Shan Wong, OUHK President under the witness of the Executive Deputy Director-General of the Office of Greater Bay Area Development of Guangdong Province and Deputy Director-General of the Development and Reform Commission of Guangdong Province Mr Cao Dahua; the Deputy Director of Department of Education of Guangdong Province Mr Zhu Chaohua; the Secretary of Zhaoqing Municipal Committee of the Communist Party of China Mr Fan Zhongjie; the Executive Vice Mayor Mr Li Ben; the Vice Mayor Ms Chen Xuanqun; the Vice Mayor Mr Tang Xiaobing; the Party Secretary of Zhaoqing University Mr Zeng Huansong; the Director of Department of Education, Science and Technology of the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the HKSAR Prof. Jiang Jianxiang; Chairman of the OUHK Council Mr Michael Wong Yick-kam; Treasurer Mr Peter Wan Kam-to; members of the Council; Provost, Vice Presidents, School Deans and Professors of the OUHK, etc.
Located in the new district of Zhaoqing in Guangdong Province, OUHK (ZQ) will occupy an area of 2,500 acres in which 500 acres are for construction use. It will be positioned as a full-fledged teaching and research university, upholding OUHK’s educational philosophy. OUHK’s quality curriculum framework, management and governance systems, teaching and research experience, and quality assurance mechanism will also be introduced. OUHK (ZQ) will be run based on OUHK’s practical teaching experience and needs, and will adopt English as the teaching medium for major professional programmes. Students will be admitted in phases with an expectation to enroll 4,000 students in the initial four years and gradually grow up to 10,000 students in total.
Chairman of the OUHK Council Mr Michael Wong expressed his heartfelt gratitude to both the Zhaoqing Municipal Government and Zhaoqing University for their staunch support, as well as OU Council members, President and the team for their hard work. “We could further leverage our strengths and create synergy to help strengthen the academic and research cooperation as well as student exchange between the two places. By establishing a new model for deepening collaboration with the mainland, OUHK hopes to groom future talents with professional knowledge, global vision, humanistic qualities, and social responsibility in the Greater Bay Area.”
President Prof. Wong was pleased to see the collaboration. He said, “The establishment of OUHK (ZQ) reaffirms that the three parties share the same passion for education. OUHK wishes to bring its mission and ample experience into the new University. In meeting the international trend and the needs of the Greater Bay Area, we will continue our effort in offering professional and practical programmes through teaching and internships in the areas of innovation and management, finance and accounting, creative arts, applied sciences, computer and information technology, energy and environment, social sciences and health care studies, etc.” Prof. Wong believed that the collaboration could add new force to the national talent development and bring OUHK to its next level of excellence.
According to the agreement, the Zhaoqing Government will fund the project’s entire construction cost and the necessary campus facilities. The planning and design of the new campus will comply with international standards and base on the design concept and needs of the OUHK. OUHK will ensure that the academic quality and research level of the new Zhaoqing campus will be on par with its Hong Kong counterpart, while Zhaoqing University will take up the coordination role of the project. All three parties have been working closely on the preparation work and will submit the application to the mainland authorities concerned for approval in a timely manner.
