HKMU Foundation Dinner unites forces across sectors to help students “go beyond limits”
HKMU holds its first Distinguished Alumni Award Presentation Ceremony and Banquet. The aim of the Award is to recognise the awardees for their outstanding achievements in their professions and contribution to HKMU and society, and to inspire students to learn from the awardees' valuable experience.
HKMU Council Chairman Ir Dr Conrad Wong Tin-cheung praises the four awardees for being pioneers in their professions and exemplifying the University's unwavering commitment to excellence and the relentless pursuit of continuous improvement.
HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing extends his heartfelt congratulations to the awardees, and hopes that the alumni would inspire students to go beyond their limits and excel.
Hong Kong Metropolitan University (HKMU) held its first Distinguished Alumni Award Presentation Ceremony and Banquet on 27 June to honour four awardees: renowned Chinese chess player Jet Chou Sai-kit, advanced medical practitioner Oscar Lee Ka-chun, Executive Director of the Hok Yau Club Leung Kwok-shing and LegCo member The Hon Edmund Wong Chun-sek. The aim of the Award is to recognise the awardees for their outstanding achievements in their professions and contribution to HKMU and society, and to inspire students to learn from the awardees' valuable experience.
In his welcome remarks, HKMU Council Chairman Ir Dr Conrad Wong Tin-cheung praised the four awardees for being pioneers in their professions and for making a significant contribution to society. “With more than 150,000 alumni nurtured so far, HKMU has always been committed to cultivating students’ sense of social responsibility and a lifelong learning spirit,” he said. “We received excellent nominations for the Award from a range of sectors. The four awardees stood out with their outstanding achievements and deeply impressed the University community, making them proud. They also exemplify the University's unwavering commitment to excellence and the relentless pursuit of continuous improvement.”
HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing extended his heartfelt congratulations to the awardees, all of whom are exemplary in their dedication to the society and public service. He hoped that the alumni would inspire students to go beyond their limits and excel. “The development of the University has always relied on the unfailing support and selfless dedication of our alumni,” said Prof. Lam. “I look forward to their continued support as we strive to reach new heights together.”
HKMU has long been committed to providing quality education and preparing its graduates to make a significant contribution to society. Starting this year, the Distinguished Alumni Award will be presented biennially to celebrate the remarkable accomplishments of HKMU alumni. The Selection Committee was chaired by HKMU Council Chairman Ir Dr Conrad Wong Tin-cheung, and its members included HKMU President Prof. Paul Lam Kwan-sing, HKMU Vice President (Resources and Development) Prof. Lui Yu-hon, HKMU Court Member Dr Eva Cheng Li Kam-fun, HKMU Court Member Dr Sophia Kao Ching-chi, and Co-founder and Non-Executive Director of Techtronic Industries Company Limited Dr Roy Chung Chi-ping. The Committee evaluated the nominees based on their achievements, service, and contribution to their profession, HKMU and the community.
Brief introduction of the Distinguished Alumni Award recipients
Mr Jet Chou Sai-kit
Mr Jet Chou Sai-kit obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Humanities from HKMU in 2008 and is currently Vice President of the HKMU Alumni Association. He is a renowned Chinese chess player and showed his dedication to promoting the development of Chinese chess by founding the Jet Chou Chess Academy. He won the Hong Kong Chess Individual Championship in 2007 and 2013 and gained the title of Hong Kong Chess Grandmaster. In 2008, he won a bronze medal at the World Mind Sports Games, becoming the first Hong Kong player to win an award in this international competition. Mr Chou was the first Hong Kong chess player to be selected as the awardee of The Ten Outstanding Young Persons in 2020 and has been an Executive Committee Member of The Outstanding Young Persons’ Association since 2021.
Mr Oscar Lee Ka-chun
Mr Oscar Lee Ka-chun is an Advanced Practice Nurse (Special Duty) at the Hospital Authority and a Part-time Lecturer at HKMU. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Nursing with Honours in Mental Health Care in 2015 at HKMU. Mr Lee has been steadfastly committed to advancing and improving nursing practice and patient care. He developed the New Case Booking System in the Psychogeriatric Outpatient Clinic, which revolutionised the logistics of patient care and boosted operational efficiency. Mr Lee also initiated collaboration with HKMU to develop an online educational programme to address behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia management in the nursing home setting. Over the past 20 years, he has volunteered with the Hong Kong Red Cross and garnered multiple awards, such as the Voluntary Service Award (2,500 hours) from Hong Kong Red Cross and the Individual Award in the Hong Kong Volunteer Award from the Agency for Volunteer Service.
Mr Leung Kwok-shing
Mr Leung Kwok-shing graduated with a Bachelor of General Studies at HKMU in 2019, is Executive Director of the Hok Yau Club and is the current President of the HKMU Alumni Association. He served as a primary school teacher for nearly 20 years and received the 3rd Outstanding Teaching Award for Moral Education and the Szeto Wah Good Teacher Award. He is a former member of the Hong Kong Men's Basketball Team. He served as a coach for the A1 Division team and the Hong Kong team and was awarded the Community Coach Recognition Award by the Jockey Club Hong Kong Coaching Awards. Mr Leung established the charity “Hoops for Hope Basketball Asia”, which provides volunteer basketball teaching services for grassroots children and children's homes. He was honoured as one of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons, the Hong Kong Outstanding Volunteer Award, the Hong Kong Humanity Award, and the Youth DreamMakers Award.
The Hon Edmund Wong Chun-sek
The Hon Edmund Wong Chun-Sek is a practising accountant and a Legislative Council Member of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, and is experienced in accounting, taxation and auditing. In 2012, he joined Patrick Wong C.P.A. Limited as an audit partner. He was awarded a Master of Business Administration in 2016 and a Master of Corporate Governance in 2017 by HKMU. Mr Wong was actively involved in the promotion and development of Hong Kong's accounting profession. Since being elected as a Legislative Council Member, Mr Wong actively voiced his opinions and made recommendations both inside and outside the Council through media and various other channels on various issues. These include promoting the development of the accounting profession, addressing challenges faced by the profession, revitalising Hong Kong's capital markets and advancing Hong Kong's economy.
